In the radiant summer splendor of Madison, Wisconsin, the third day of the 2023 CrossFit Games is in full swing. It’s a day that marks the proverbial ‘moment of truth’ for many competitors, a day that can determine the hopefuls from the also-rans. The workouts designed for today are nothing short of a multidimensional fitness examination, ranging from the test of raw endurance to sheer strength and meticulous technique. Success, it appears, will favor the athletes who epitomize versatility – those who have managed to seamlessly meld a range of abilities, leaving no glaring weaknesses to be exploited.
Khrennikov: On the Precipice of Glory
One such athlete who has caught the public’s eye is Roman Khrennikov. With an already commendable lead – his worst showing after six grueling workouts is a modest ninth place – Roman is potentially just a few steps away from the coveted title. His consistent and impressive performance could well turn day three into a triumphant march towards victory.
Women’s Division: Unpredictability Reigns and a Young Star Rises
In stark contrast, the women’s division resembles a high-stakes game of chess, where the outcome is still largely undecided. Emma Lawson, an 18-year-old prodigy, has caught everyone’s attention, leading the way and signaling an exciting future for the sport. Yet, given the mercurial nature of the competition, the current standing could be reshuffled in an instant, reminding us that until the final workout, nothing is truly set in stone.

Day 3 Individual Workout: Recap The Highlights
Cross-Country 5K
The first order of the day for individual competitors was stripped of all frills – a simple 5K run. Endurance has always been a critical cornerstone in the realm of CrossFit, and there’s arguably no purer test of this quality than a sustained, long-distance run.
The task at hand:
Complete a 5K run in the fastest time possible.
Men’s Results
Hoste Triumphs, Adler Falters
Jelle Hoste kicked off day three with a performance that could only be described as breathtaking. His completion of the 5K run in a lightning-fast 16:39 minutes left both his competitors and spectators in awe. Despite not being pegged as a favorite for this event, his extraordinary show of prowess will undoubtedly cement his place among CrossFit’s elite runners.
Jeffrey Adler, in a surprising twist of events, was the pace-setter right from the get-go. He held the lead till the final section of the 5K race, making it appear as though he would effortlessly clinch the top spot. Yet, despite dominating the race for the majority of the time, Adler found himself bested by Hoste at the finishing line.
Roman Khrennikov’s performance, on the other hand, painted a starkly different picture. He seemed to grapple with the pace, with his heavy steps and drooping head indicating a struggle to keep up with the leaders. But, showcasing an impressive resurgence of energy on the final lap, he managed to claim the third spot, proving his mettle once again.
- Jelle Hoste — 16:39.68

The Cross-Country 5K saw all 30 women running alongside the men, resulting in an awe-inspiring spectacle of athletic prowess. Emily Rolfe took the spotlight, not only claiming victory in the women’s division with seeming ease but also outpacing many of her male counterparts, including renowned competitors like Justin Medeiros and Noah Ohlsen.
Hot on Rolfe’s heels was Katrin Tanja Davidsdottir, who claimed the second spot in the women’s category, crossing the finish line a mere 30 seconds after Rolfe. Her performance was equally impressive, as she managed to outrun several male competitors and all the women, save for Rolfe.
Meanwhile, Arielle Loewen staged a late attempt to claim the second position but couldn’t quite overtake Davidsdottir. However, her efforts were rewarded with a well-deserved third place finish, trailing by just one second.

Intervals
The second challenge of the day for individual competitors held a familiar tone, closely resembling the routines they regularly practice in the gym. Ultimately, success hinged on two factors – how well the athletes had mastered the movements, and how effectively they utilized their rest period following the first interval. This workout became an assessment of skill proficiency as well as strategic recovery.
Two intervals for total time:
- 21 box jump-overs (20/24 inches)
- 15-calorie row
- 9 burpee box jump-overs
- 21 box jump-overs
- 15-calorie row
- 9 burpee box jump-overs (36/48 inches)
Rest until 6-minute mark, then:
- 9 burpee box jump-overs
- 15-calorie row
- 21 box jump-overs
- 9 burpee box jump-overs
- 15-calorie row
- 21 box jump-overs

Women’s Results

Completing the first interval in a brisk 3:53 minutes, Lawson ensured a substantial rest period of over two minutes before embarking on the second leg of the workout. Mirroring her first interval time, she crossed the finish line at an impressive 7:48 minutes.
While Lawson remained the sole woman to crack the 8-minute barrier, Emma Cary came tantalizingly close with a commendable time of 8:01 minutes. Despite not breaching the 8-minute mark, Cary secured a comfortable second place, finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of Arielle Loewen.

Men’s Results
Vellner Triumphs, Koski and Martin Impress
Despite displaying subpar performances in prior events, Patrick Vellner’s victory in the Intervals workout was a startling twist. Utilizing his experience to its fullest extent, Vellner claimed dominance in his first event win of the 2023 CrossFit Games. He managed to amass a formidable lead over his competitors, allowing him to nonchalantly stroll across the finish line.
Jonne Koski, too, delivered an exceptional performance, moving over the boxes with remarkable ease and burning through the target calories on the rower with efficiency. This effort earned him the second place, trailing Vellner by 24 seconds. Bayley Martin rounded off the top three, clocking in just three seconds after Koski.
Roman Khrennikov, however, faltered in this event. Two significant mistakes saw him slip to a disappointing 20th place, providing an opportunity for his rivals to close the gap in the overall standings.

Olympic Total
The final workout of the day is a simplistic yet unpredictable challenge, given the sheer number of strength athletes vying for the title. The event calls for each athlete to discover their one-rep max in two traditional Olympic weightlifting events. Consequently, their heaviest Snatch and Clean & Jerk lifts are combined, with the most weight lifted across both events earning the highest points.
The challenge specifics
Maximize load for:
- 1-rep-max Snatch 1-rep-max Clean and Jerk
Women’s Results

Unsurprisingly, no other competitor could match her extraordinary display of power, earning her a decisive victory and 100 points in the final event of the day.
The struggle for second place was fiercely contested, as several women keenly observed their competitors and aimed to outlift them by the narrowest of margins. After a gritty face-off, Christine Kolenbrander clinched the second spot with a total lift of 447 pounds, while Karin Freyove narrowly trailed behind in third place, lifting a combined 446 pounds.

It’s essential to note that these two workouts were ranked independently. Consequently, the top-performing team in the “Run Lift Relay” was awarded 100 points, while the team that led the “Lift Run Relay” also garnered 100 points.

Both team members displayed proficiency in the Snatch segment of the workout, but it was their running prowess that gave them the winning edge.
CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue emerged as potential rivals to Invictus, not allowing them to extend their lead too far. With a finishing time of 04:12, Oslo Navy Blue was just five seconds slower than Invictus, earning them the second spot.

This cycle was repeated twice more before the team could finally cross the finish line.
