In the energetic city of Madison, WI, the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games are unfolding, beginning Tuesday, August 1, and drawing to a close on Sunday, August 6. An array of athletes from the Age Group and Adaptive divisions sparked off the Games on Aug. 1, marking their conclusion on Aug. 3. The center stage is now set for the Team Division and the event’s crowd pullers — the Individual Men and Individual Women divisions. These captivating competitions are poised to commence on Aug. 3, eventually culminating in the grand crowning ceremony on Aug. 6.
The Thinning Herd: A Two-Tier Cut System at Play
This year’s games introduce a ruthless elimination format in both the Team and Individual divisions. After the punishing workout sessions of Friday, August 4, the competitive field will be trimmed to the top 30 Teams and Individual competitors. The subsequent workout challenges on Saturday further narrow the contesting field to the elite 20 Teams, the top 20 Individual Men, and the finest 20 Individual Women, all vying for the coveted title.
The Veterans’ Quest: Medeiros Eyes a Treble, Toomey Steps Aside
The Men’s division brims with anticipation as Justin Medeiros, the two-time champion, sets his sights on joining the exclusive club of three-time Men’s winners. In a striking contrast, the Women’s division anticipates the rise of a new star. For the first time in six years, a fresh champion will ascend the throne, filling the void left by Tia-Clair Toomey. Toomey, the most triumphant athlete in the sport’s history, has chosen to step away from the 2023 competitive season to embark on a personal journey of parenthood. This break in her reign opens the door for a new champion, heralding a dynamic shift in the Women’s division.

Day One Unleashes Tri-Test for Individual Athletes at the 2023 CrossFit Games
The Gauntlet Thrown: Day One Unveils a Triple Challenge The first day of Individual competition is poised to be an intense ordeal, challenging athletes with three separate events spaced throughout the day. The depth of the field ensures that both Men and Women athletes will vie for supremacy in multiple heats, each contending within their own respective divisions.
A deceptive Simplicity: The ‘Ride’ Challenge
The inaugural event may seem straightforward on the surface, but it’s far from a breeze. Athletes face a grueling 40-minute ordeal where they are tasked with completing as many 2,400-meter laps as possible. Their chosen steed for this race? A Trek Bikes Marlin 8 mountain bike. To add to the complexity, each lap also necessitates an 80-meter run as athletes must manually transport their bikes through one section of the race course. What appears simple on paper quickly escalates into a true test of endurance, strategy, and will.

Pig Chipper
A Test of Strength and Resolve The competition turns to an intimidating challenge – manhandling the ‘Pig.’ This colossal implement, stretching to nearly eight feet in height, about three feet in width, and standing 20 inches tall, tips the scales at a massive 254 kilograms (560 pounds). Its daunting dimensions are sure to test the strength and determination of even the most seasoned competitors. As part of a grueling chipper-style workout, athletes will be required to complete a set task as quickly as possible, battling both the clock and the formidable ‘Pig.’ This is truly a test of physical prowess, strategic planning, and sheer grit.
- 10 pig flips
- 25 chest-to-bar pull-ups
- 50 toes-to-bar
- 100 wall ball shots

Note on ‘Chipper’
The Sequential Challenge A “chipper” workout is unique in its structure, demanding a strategic and disciplined approach. The key rule? All repetitions of one exercise must be completed before the athlete can progress to the subsequent exercise. This strict sequence not only tests the athletes’ fitness but also their capacity to strategize and adapt, adding another layer of challenge to the 2023 CrossFit Games.
