The 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games launched on August 1, with athletes from various Age Group divisions competing for the prestigious title of The Fittest on Earth®. The divisions span from 14-15 to 65+, each featuring athletes whose commitment to fitness and health is truly inspirational. As these individuals exemplify the rewards of regular, dedicated training, they also underscore the Games’ core message: age is no barrier to physical fitness.
Shifting Sands: New Contenders Emerge
The sands of time have shifted some athletes into new age categories, including the 2022 champions of the Girls (14-15) and Boys (14-15) divisions, Lucy McGonigle and RJ Mestre, respectively. Mestre faces the added challenge of going head-to-head with the reigning Boys (16-17) champion, Ty Jenkins. In a significant development, the Girls (16-17) title stands unclaimed as the 2022 winner, Olivia Kerstetter, has transitioned to the Individual Women division.
Veteran Champions in New Territory
In a similar vein, two-time defending Women (40-44) champion Kelly Friel now finds herself competing in the Women (45-49) division. Her aim is to extend her winning streak by clinching the now-vacant crown in her new category. Notably, Ali Crawford, the 2022 winner of the Women (45-49) category, will not be participating in the 2023 Games.
Unforeseen Withdrawals Shake the Field
In an unexpected turn of events, Shannon Aiken, the reigning champion in the Men (60-64) division, withdrew from the competition under undisclosed circumstances during the Gymnastic Chipper event. This unexpected development guarantees that a new champion will be crowned in the Men’s (60-64) category for 2023.

The Gymnastics Chipper Challenge
On the final day, athletes were put to the test with an intricate medley of gymnastics and body weight exercises. This challenge, dubbed as the “Gymnastics Chipper,” was a formidable sequence of nine different exercises that required to be completed in a maximum time of 15 minutes.
The series began with a 48-foot handstand walk, followed by 30 box jumps. Next up was a set of 30 Glute-Hamstring Developer (GHD) sit-ups, which led to the midway mark – a demanding 30 single-leg squats. The athletes then engaged in 30 toes-to-bars, before revisiting the single-leg squats. Once completed, another round of 30 GHD sit-ups and 30 box jumps awaited them. The final stretch involved an exact repeat of the initial challenge – a 48-foot handstand walk.
This intricate blend of workouts was designed to assess the athletes’ body control, balance, strength, and agility under pressure. With the clock ticking and the stakes high, this event was a testament to the sheer athletic prowess on display at the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games.

The Pulling Power Challenge
A Medley of Strength and Endurance
Day two of the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games saw athletes put their strength, endurance, and power to the ultimate test in a medley aptly titled “Pulling Power.” This event was designed to assess the athletes’ abilities to recruit their posterior chain effectively, emphasizing the power of their back muscles in a high-intensity setting.
The Challenge Breakdown
Athletes had to push their physical limits and mental resilience as they took on three challenging rounds, all under a stringent 13-minute time cap. The rounds comprised of three rope climbs, ten deadlifts, a 42-foot sled pull, and a 126-foot sled push.
The rope climbs tested the athletes’ upper body strength and grip endurance, while the deadlifts demanded impeccable form, core stability, and sheer power from their posterior chain. The sled pull and push components of the challenge further pushed the athletes’ stamina, strength, and determination to their brink.

Day One Events
An Early Start to the Games
The 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games started bright and early at 9 a.m. CST, launching into a day of grueling competition. The first to take the field were athletes from the Age Group and Adaptive divisions, each participating in their respective events concurrently. The start of the Games marked the beginning of their journey to prove themselves as the fittest in their respective categories.
Age Group & Adaptive Divisions Take the Stage
The first day witnessed the Age Group and Adaptive divisions setting the tone for the competition. Their presence highlighted the inclusivity of the CrossFit Games, where athletes of all ages and abilities get an opportunity to showcase their fitness levels and grit. Their respective events were a testament to the diverse range of skills required to compete in the CrossFit Games.
Olympic Weightlifting Total Challenge
The Age Group division’s opening event was an Olympic weightlifting total challenge. This two-part test required competitors to perform at their maximum strength within a tight time frame.
The first component of this challenge demanded the athletes to achieve a one-repetition max (1RM) in the snatch within three minutes. This not only tested their physical strength but also their technique and ability to perform under pressure.
Immediately after, the athletes were given another three minutes to reach their 1RM in the clean & jerk. This required them to push their limits, balancing power, technique, and endurance, even as fatigue set in.

Farmers Field Challenge
From Rest to Rigor: The Transition to the Farmers Field Challenge
Following a mere minute’s rest after the intense Olympic weightlifting total challenge, the competitors were thrown into the next event, the Farmers Field challenge. With an 18-minute time cap, each division had to tackle a series of physically demanding exercises that required both power and stamina.
Breaking Down the Farmers Field Challenge
The Farmers Field challenge is a testament to the multifaceted nature of fitness that CrossFit promotes. The competitors started the event with an 84-foot farmer’s carry to a piece of equipment known as the Pig. Following this, they performed 21 burpee Pig jump-overs, requiring both agility and strength.
Next, the athletes executed a farmer’s carry maneuver around three dummies, testing their endurance and grip strength. The challenge then switched gears to demand accuracy and lower body strength with 50 wall ball shots, followed by a test of cardiovascular endurance with a 50-calorie row.
After another round of 50 wall ball shots, the competitors retraced their steps, performing a farmer’s carry around three dummies, 21 burpee Pig jump-overs, and finally, an 84-foot farmer’s carry to finish off the challenge.
The Pig: A Unique Challenge
The Pig, a distinctive piece of equipment used in this event, is an almost eight-foot-tall, three-foot-wide, 20-inch-high obstacle weighing several hundred pounds. It adds an extra dimension to the competition, demanding a blend of strength, balance, and technique.

Helen: A Familiar Test
Helen – The Benchmark WOD
The CrossFit athletes at the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games were faced with a benchmark Workout of the Day (WOD), Helen. Familiar to anyone who’s been involved in CrossFit training, whether an elite competitor or a recreational fitness enthusiast, Helen is an effective measure of an athlete’s functional fitness.
Recognizing the Athleticism of All Ages
The games highlighted the athletic prowess across all ages, as demonstrated by the 64-year-old competitor Susan Clarke. Her dedication and tenacity were on full display as she took on the demanding Helen workout, proving that age is merely a number in the world of fitness.
The Components of Helen
Helen consists of three rounds, each demanding a balanced mix of endurance, strength, and agility. Athletes start with a 400-meter run to test their cardiovascular endurance. The run is followed by 21 kettlebell swings, challenging their strength and power. The round concludes with 12 pull-ups, demanding a combination of upper-body strength and muscular endurance.
