As the ultimate test of strength, endurance, agility, and athleticism, the 2023 CrossFit Games promises to be yet another memorable contest for the world’s top CrossFit athletes. The global community of CrossFit enthusiasts is preparing to converge on Madison, WI, from August 1 to 6, 2023, to face a rigorous array of physical challenges standing between them and the coveted title of the Fittest on Earth.

An Exciting Blend of Familiar and Novel Workouts

On July 19, 2023, the CrossFit Games organization began unveiling some of the workouts planned for this six-day main event in Wisconsin’s state capital. Those familiar with the usual CrossFit workouts can expect to see some recognizable elements in the upcoming Games. However, there will also likely be a few surprises in store to keep athletes across all divisions on their toes.

As one of the most formidable fitness competitions on the globe, the 2023 CrossFit Games is set to challenge the world’s most elite CrossFitters from August 1-6 in Madison, WI. The Games’ organizers have started releasing details about the workouts that the athletes will be put through during the six-day competition. These workouts combine familiar elements from the usual CrossFit regime with some unexpected twists that are sure to keep competitors on edge.

Thursday, August 3

Long Ride into Endurance

In keeping with CrossFit Games tradition, the first day of competition will see a long bike ride that tests both speed and endurance. Dubbed the “Ride,” this event will have competitors completing as many laps as possible on a Trek brand mountain bike in a 40-minute time frame, racing over grass and dirt terrain with flat elevation.

A Gritty Encounter with the ‘Pig’

The “Pig Chipper” is set to be a demanding event involving a piece of equipment known as the Pig. This unusually large implement, standing nearly eight-feet tall, three-feet wide, and 20-inches high, weighs up to 254 kilograms (560 pounds). Athletes will have to demonstrate their prowess in manhandling the Pig through a chipper-style workout consisting of various exercises, including pig flips, chest-to-bar pull-ups, toes-to-bar, and wall ball shots.

The final workout on Thursday is the “Inverted Medley”, a test of balance and focus. This routine includes ramps, pirouettes, handstand walks, free-standing handstand push-ups, and pull-overs.

Friday, August 4

The ‘Alpaca Redux’: A Test of Endurance and Strength

The “Alpaca Redux” will see athletes push the Alpaca sled, weighing 136 pounds when empty, for 126 feet, followed by three rounds of legless rope climbs, kettlebell clean & jerks, and a 42-foot sled push.

Ski Bag: An Evening Challenge

The “Ski Bag” event, scheduled for Friday night inside the Coliseum, will test athletes’ stamina and strength. In addition to skiing on a ski erg, athletes will perform sandbag squats, with expected weights being 200 pounds for men and 150 pounds for women.

Saturday, August 5

Cross-Country 5K: A Test of Stamina

Saturday’s workout will likely be a 5K run. The specific details of the course remain under wraps, but if it’s anything like the 2022 “The Capitol” workout, athletes can expect to face additional challenges beyond the 3.1-mile run.

Olympic Weightlifting Total: A Display of Power

The “Olympic Weightlifting Total” workout will require athletes to display explosive strength by performing two key movements of Olympic weightlifting – the clean & jerk and the snatch. Scores will be determined by the total weight lifted.
