Day Two at the CrossFit Games: Individual Athletes’ Workout Recap
The Alpaca Redux
he first event of the second day at the 2023 CrossFit Games, ‘The Alpaca Redux’, tested the competitors’ grit and strength with a heavy sled push. Athletes had to engage their full body, digging deep to push the sled as forcefully as they could. Rope climbs were thrown into the mix, adding a tactical layer to the event – those more skilled in this exercise were able to make significant gains in time.
The event structure was as follows:
For time:
- Start with a 126-foot sled push, loaded with all six kettlebells.
Then, complete three rounds for time of:
- 2 legless rope climbs
- 12 kettlebell clean and jerks
- 42-foot sled push, beginning with two kettlebells* (53/70 lb)
*Note: Athletes were required to add two kettlebells to the sled after each round. This workout structure pushed the athletes’ endurance, strength, and strategic planning to their limits.
Men’s Results
The second day of the 2023 CrossFit Games saw Roman Khrennikov, the current leader, solidifying his top spot. Unwilling to relinquish his position, Khrennikov threw himself into ‘The Alpaca Redux’ with unwavering determination, ultimately clinching victory with a time of 12:34. After the exhausting event, Khrennikov found himself spent, crawling towards the nearest fan to recuperate in its cooling breeze.
Jack Farlow seemed to thrive under the challenging sunny conditions and intense heat, claiming second place in the event. He joined Khrennikov as one of the only men to complete the event in under 13 minutes. Hot on their heels was Brent Fikowski, who clocked a time of 13:21, securing him the third-place position. These performances underscored the athletes’ extraordinary resilience and willpower, heating up the competition as the games progress.

Only a handful of women, five to be precise, managed to complete the grueling ‘Alpaca Redux’ event. Emma Tall outshone the rest, beating the nearest competitor by over 40 seconds. Tall displayed remarkable determination in her final sled push, keeping her head down and refusing to stop until she had crossed the finish line.
Laura Horvath, displaying a late surge of power on her sled push, secured the second position as she overtook the initial frontrunner, Alex Gazan.
Gazan’s race, however, did not go as smoothly as she would have liked. Leading the event from the outset, Gazan encountered a significant setback when one of her shoes fell off mere meters from the finish line. Despite her best efforts to keep going, her feet kept slipping on the grass, allowing both Tall and Horvath to overtake her. Nevertheless, Gazan persevered, putting her shoes back on and successfully pushing the sled over the finish line.

Ski-Bag
The Ski-Bag event presented a daunting challenge on the second day of the 2023 CrossFit Games, testing the limits of competitors’ core muscles with continuous activation throughout both workouts. Interestingly, both of these exercises are integral to a CrossFit athlete’s training regimen, making this event incredibly competitive.
The workout structure was as follows:
For time:
- 30-calorie SkiErg
- 30 sandbag squats (125/200 lb)
Then, another round:
- 20-calorie SkiErg
- 20 sandbag squats (125/200 lb)
Athletes were required to first complete 30 SkiErg calories and 30 sandbag squats, followed by a round of 20 SkiErg calories and 20 sandbag squats. The intensity of the event offered an exciting showcase of strength, resilience, and core power.
Men’s Results
In what marked his third appearance at the CrossFit Games, Colten Mertens claimed his first-ever event victory in the Ski-Bag challenge. The event was structured as follows:
3 rounds for time:
- 400-meter run
- 12 bar muscle-ups
- 21 dumbbell snatches (35/50 lb)

Despite its straightforward premise, the Cross-Country 5K event posed a unique challenge for the teams at the 2023 CrossFit Games. The only requirement for this event was for teams to run a combined total of 5,000 meters. However, the simplicity of the task belied the importance of pace coordination, endurance, and team unity.
