The first day of Individual competition at the 2023 CrossFit Games has wrapped up, and Alexis Raptis and Roman Khrennikov have emerged as frontrunners in the Women’s and Men’s divisions respectively. With three days still left in this section of the competition, Raptis and Khrennikov have set a formidable pace. For the Women, Emily Rolfe is hot on Raptis’ heels in second place, closely followed by Arielle Loewen in third. In the Men’s division, Jay Crouch occupies the second spot, with Spencer Panchik nipping at his heels in third place.
The 2023 CrossFit Games Individual Leaderboard Comes Alive
The athletes’ day kicked off at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time in Madison, WI, under fair weather conditions. In contrast to last year’s Games, which saw major weather disruptions impacting the event schedule, 2023 has seen a smoother run. Unlike the 2022 Games, which included plans for a rest day, the 2023 edition will see the surviving Individual athletes compete on all four consecutive days, culminating in the Finals on Sunday, August 6, 2023.

Event 1: ‘Ride’ Results — A Pioneering Feat by Emma Lawson and Ant Haynes
Day One Shocker: The ‘Ride’ Event
The ‘Ride’ workout challenged athletes to complete as many 2,400-meter laps as possible within a 40-minute timeframe, riding a Trek Bikes Marlin 8 Mountain Bike. Additionally, each lap demanded an 80-meter run, as athletes had to manually return their bikes to a designated spot to resume riding.
Stars of the Show: Emma Lawson and Ant Haynes
Undoubtedly, the standout performance of the ‘Ride’ event came from Emma Lawson, who raced ahead in the Women’s division, completing seven laps and claiming her first-ever Games event victory. Lawson, who earned the title of 2022 CrossFit Rookie of the Year, seems to be capitalizing on her impressive debut. In the Men’s division, Ant Haynes eclipsed his competition by also completing seven laps. Despite this, the current overall leaders, Khrennikov and Crouch, weren’t far behind, securing the fourth and fifth positions respectively. After the inaugural day, Haynes sits in the 30th place overall.

Event 2: ‘Pig Chipper’ Results — Dominant Displays by Khrennikov and Horvath
The Grind of ‘Pig Chipper’
The ‘Pig Chipper’ workout truly tested the mettle of the athletes, tasking them to maneuver a hefty “pig” weighing 254 kilograms (560 pounds) while simultaneously tackling other exercises in chipper style. To reiterate, a chipper workout necessitates the completion of all repetitions of one exercise before progressing to the next. The sequence for this event was:
- 10 pig flips
- 25 chest-to-bar pull-ups
- 50 toes-to-bar
- 100 wall ball shots
- 50 toes-to-bar
- 25 chest-to-bar pull-ups
- 10 pig flips
Outstanding Performers: Khrennikov and Horvath
This event saw Roman Khrennikov begin to pull away from his competitors, finishing the ‘Pig Chipper’ in an impressive time of 14:28.77. This put him almost 16 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Lazar Dukic. In the Women’s division, Laura Horvath outshone her rivals with an even more commanding performance, clocking in at 13:50.40 – over a minute faster than any other competitor. These performances further intensified the competitive spirit at the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games.

Event 3: ‘Inverted Medley’ Results — Unrivaled Performances by Brandon and Greashaber
The Challenge of ‘Inverted Medley’
The closing event of Day 1 at the 2023 CrossFit Games, aptly named the ‘Inverted Medley,’ demanded a high level of handstand proficiency from the athletes. With a seven-minute time cap, athletes were tasked with completing the following sequence for time:
- 30-foot unbroken handstand walk over the ramp
- 8 free-standing handstand push-ups
- Unbroken obstacle steps to a 180-degree pirouette
- 16 pull-overs
- 360-degree pirouette to an unbroken step obstacle
- 8 free-standing handstand push-ups
- 30-foot unbroken handstand walk over the ramp
Top Performers: Brandon and Greashaber
In the Women’s division, Danielle Brandon emerged as the fastest competitor, completing the challenging sequence in an impressive time of 3:12.75. In the Men’s field, Cole Greashaber took the top spot with a time of 3:47.89. However, the event also highlighted a noteworthy narrative involving two-time reigning champion Justin Medeiros, who finished as the runner-up. After the first day of competition, Medeiros found himself sitting in an uncharacteristic 22nd place overall. The commentary team noted that he had fallen during the ‘Ride’ event, but the precise implications of this incident remain unclear. While it’s too early to forecast a new champion, Medeiros’ reign appears to be under threat after a challenging first day.
