On August 1, the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games launched into action. Athletes in three distinct categories – Multi Extremity, Lower Extremity, and Upper Extremity – began their battle for the coveted title of The Fittest on Earth® in their respective divisions.
Defending Champions and Rising Stars
With numerous defending champions, including Casey Acree of the Men’s Upper Extremity division and Valerie Cohen from the Women’s Lower Extremity division, the competition is set to be fierce. Yet, the field is also brimming with potential as countless athletes strive to surpass their personal bests and reach new pinnacles of athletic excellence.
Restructuring the Adaptive Division
In the lead-up to the 2023 season, significant changes were made to the structure of the Adaptive division. The classification criteria were reassessed and revamped, with verification standards introduced to ensure athletes with similar abilities compete against one another in appropriate divisions.
Renaming for Clarity
To further streamline the Adaptive division, the category previously known as “Neuromuscular” was renamed to Multi Extremity. According to CrossFit, the change was implemented to eradicate confusion surrounding the classification’s name, which was based on the origin of the impairment. The new name is seen as more representative of the athletes’ abilities within the division.

With three more events to tackle before the final day, the stage is set for impressive performances and potential upsets.
The Cross-Country 5K Challenge
After a period of well-deserved rest and recuperation, the day’s activities conclude with the classic Cross-Country 5K. A test of stamina and speed, the 5K is a staple of the CrossFit Games. In an intriguing variation, while the Upper Extremity and Multi Extremity divisions compete in a traditional run, athletes in the Lower Extremity division face the challenge of completing a 5K on a SkiErg. This event is currently in progress, with results to be announced as they become available.
Pulling Power — A Test of Strength and Endurance
Day two also sees athletes engaging in the ‘Pulling Power’ challenge, a demanding test of their back and upper body strength, as well as their endurance. This event comprises a grueling medley of activities that push athletes to their limits.
