Recognized for his remarkable strength in the Raw and Raw With Wraps divisions, Phillip Herndon embraced a new challenge by venturing into the Equipped division. Equipping himself with a single-ply suit, he meticulously prepared for his debut. The stage was set at the 2023 IPA National & Pennsylvania State Powerlifting Championships on November 18-19, where Herndon competed in the fiercely contested 125-kilogram weight class. In a display of unparalleled strength and determination, he emerged as the new record holder for Squat & Total All-Time Equipped World Records. In a groundbreaking achievement, Phillip Herndon made powerlifting history by achieving All-Time World Records in Squat and Total Weight in his debut with equipment in the 125KG category.
Herndon’s journey was not without hurdles. His opening squat at 970 pounds (440 kilograms) received red lights from the judges, presenting an early setback. Undeterred, he boldly increased the weight for his second attempt, successfully lifting 1,020 pounds (462.5 kilograms) to the approval of the judging panel.
Setting his sights on the World Record, Herndon loaded an astonishing 1,070 pounds (485 kilograms) onto the barbell. Although his initial attempt was disallowed, a rare rule in the IPA’s guidelines provided him with a unique opportunity. According to the rule, a lifter is granted a fourth attempt if the weight being lifted exceeds the existing World Record.
“Fourth attempts may only be taken for purposes of setting world records…”
With determination and resilience, Phillip Herndon seized this rare chance. His second attempt at the 1,070-pound (485-kilogram) squat left the judges with no option but to award him all-white lights, securing his position as the official U125KG Equippment Squat All-Time World Record holder on his debut.
This historic achievement surpassed the previous record held by Anthony Oliveira, who had set the bar at 1,036.1 kilograms (470 kilograms) during the 2021 APF Buckeye Bash.
