Jay Cutler, a celebrated four-time Mr. Olympia champion, recently offered insights into the unexpected decision by Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay to pull out of the much-anticipated 2023 Mr. Olympia contest.
Big Ramy: A Meteoric Rise in Bodybuilding
Mamdouh Elssbiay, known to many as Big Ramy, catapulted to prominence early in his bodybuilding career. Right out of the gate, he secured a victory at the Amateur Mr. Olympia, propelling him swiftly into professional ranks. His pro debut was no less spectacular, as he showcased his meticulously crafted physique at the 2013 New York Pro.
From Newcomer to Champion: Ramy’s Imprint on Olympia
Despite his rookie status, Elssbiay swiftly caught the attention of the bodybuilding community. His debut at the Mr. Olympia stage resulted in an impressive eighth-place finish. This marked the beginning of a series of remarkable feats over the ensuing nine years, peaking with his Mr. Olympia crowns in both 2020 and 2021. However, the 2022 contest presented an unforeseen twist with Hadi Choopan emerging as the victor and Ramy descending to fifth place. This unexpected turn didn’t dampen Ramy’s spirits or his resolve to rebound stronger.

Cutler Weighs in on Ramy’s Sabbatical
In a recent discussion, Jay Cutler explored the potential challenges that Big Ramy might encounter after deciding to take a break from top-tier bodybuilding competitions.
“It’s going to be very difficult, and now him not competing this year. I think unless he gets in the early shows next year, remember he is Mr. Olympia so he is qualified for life he can come back in 10 years if he wants. Once you step away and get back into real life it’s much different and Ramy doesn’t need money, he doesn’t thrive on the fame. It’s really gonna come down to what he wants to do but I can tell you once he steps away and maybe he attends the show or doesn’t attend and sees either a repeat champ or a new champ it’s gonna make it that much more difficult for him to get that fire to come back.”
“I think for Ramy yes he can come back but I don’t feel like he should rush it and say okay since he sat out the Olympia he jumps into Arnold or the early shows like to see. I think he needs to really take the time and plan accordingly and I think he should really do his best to say okay maybe not even next year compete. I mean he’s gonna be 40 by that time he needs to see where his head is at he has a family he’s got more important things.”
Big Ramy’s Anticipated Appearance in Orlando
While Big Ramy may not be vying for the title at this year’s Mr. Olympia, enthusiasts can eagerly anticipate his guest appearance from November 2-5 in Orlando, Florida.
Sportsmanship: Big Ramy’s Hallmark
One standout quality of Big Ramy is his unwavering sportsmanship, regardless of any competition’s outcome. Jay Cutler, a voice of authority in the bodybuilding realm, fervently hopes to see Ramy reclaim his position and become only the second individual to regain the prestigious Sandow trophy after relinquishing it.
