"It's called a press conference. It should be open to the media,"remarked Jay Cutler to Milos Sarcev.

In a recent episode of the Cutler Cast Podcast, bodybuilding icon Jay Cutler expressed his views on modernizing the Mr. Olympia brand. He advocated for the introduction of UFC-style post-show press conferences after each Mr. Olympia event, emphasizing the potential benefits for the sport

“Should the press conference at the @mrolympiallc be more like the @ufc ?” asks Jay Cutler.

An Enduring Legacy: The Joe Weider Fitness and Performance Weekend

The annual Joe Weider Fitness and Performance Weekend, established in 1965, stands as a testament to the enduring allure of bodybuilding. As the curtain rises each year, the event showcases a parade of the world’s finest bodybuilders, all seeking the coveted Mr. Olympia title, the pinnacle of bodybuilding achievements.

Press Conferences: A Theatrical Prelude

Pre-event press conferences have traditionally provided a backdrop of anticipation and drama, setting the stage for the main event. Iconic moments, such as the light-hearted exchanges between Jay Cutler and Ronnie Coleman or Breon Ansley’s playful gesture of handing his shirt to Chris Bumstead, have endeared these conferences to fans, offering a rare glimpse into the personal dynamics between competitors.

The 2022 Spectacle: A Blend of Bravado and Showmanship

Last year’s Mr. Olympia press conference was a case in point. It unfurled a tapestry of memorable moments: Blessing Awodibu and Nick Walker’s spirited verbal jousting, and Michal Krizo’s audacious shirt-ripping display of physique, ensuring the event was etched in the annals of bodybuilding lore.

Jay Cutler’s Vision: The Promise of Post-Event Confrontations

However, Jay Cutler, a voice of authority in the realm of bodybuilding, posits that the real drama could unfold in the aftermath. He advocates for post-event press conferences, akin to those in UFC. In Cutler’s estimation, having competitors come face-to-face following the announcement of results would escalate the intensity, offering fans even richer, unscripted moments to cherish.

“It Would Be Interesting” – Jay Cutler, Milos Sarcev Talk UFC-Inspired Mr. Olympia Press Conferences
Cutler believes fans would appreciate pressers that took place before and after Mr. Olympia shows. He added that hearing from the top five after the event wraps up would be ideal.

“I was watching the YouTube playbacks of you know where each fighter comes in and they interview them and their thoughts. How could we don’t do that in bodybuilding? Don’t you think it would be nice the night of to like get a person’s feedback of the top five or something?” Cutler wonders.

“It would be interesting,” said Milos Sarcev. “Before and after.”

“I think the press conference that they do at the Olympia a couple days out… I don’t know man. I just think the press should be able to ask – it’s called a press conference. It should be open to media, and then I think there should be a follow-up. I know they do the next-day seminar. But I feel like your emotions and all that stuff, what’s it like right after?” shared Cutler.

Milos Sarcev Weighs In: The Power of Media Engagement

Echoing Cutler’s sentiments, Milos Sarcev emphasized the pivotal role of media in amplifying the sport’s allure. Drawing parallels with other major sports, Sarcev pointed out that journalists often add an element of zest to the narrative, effectively enhancing fan engagement. Such a media-driven approach, he contends, could further elevate bodybuilding’s global appeal and intrigue.

“In every sport, there are reporters that spice it up with marketing. That’s what brings the interest,” added Sarcev.

Rivalries: The Pulse of Bodybuilding’s Popularity

It’s undeniable that the true essence of press conferences is often distilled in the fiery rivalries that erupt on the stage. These passionate confrontations don’t just reflect personal ambitions but also powerfully amplify the sport’s magnetism. The 2014 showdown between bodybuilding icons Phil Heath and Kai Greene serves as a testament to this. As the tension between the two reached its zenith during a particularly tempestuous press conference, it was Heath, fondly known as “The Gift”, who eventually had the final say by clinching the coveted Olympia title.

Despite the heat of their confrontations, Heath remains convinced that the fervor of his rivalry with Greene overshadowed even the intense clashes between Cutler and Ronnie Coleman. Such episodes serve as a reminder to fans of the crucial role psychological battles play, especially when the revered Mr. Olympia title hangs in the balance.

Cutler’s Vision: Revamping the Olympia Press Conferences

With an eye on the future, Jay Cutler articulates his aspirations for the format of Olympia’s press events. He envisions a dual-presser system, initiating with an introductory session before the Mr. Olympia showcase and culminating with a post-event debrief. Such an approach, he believes, would not only enrich the fan experience but also further spotlight the dynamism and drama inherent to bodybuilding.

Overview

In his recent Cutler Cast Podcast, bodybuilding icon Jay Cutler suggested that the Mr. Olympia brand could benefit from UFC-style post-show press conferences. This comes as part of a broader vision to revitalize the legacy of the Mr. Olympia event. Cutler’s proposal aims to inject renewed enthusiasm and modernity into the sport’s traditional presentation methods, building upon the long-standing prestige of the Joe Weider Fitness Weekend.
