Esteemed as one of the most commanding figures in the 83-kilogram weight class of powerlifting, Russel Orhii, has been relatively quiet on the competitive front recently. However, this does not signal a retreat from his unwavering dedication to the sport. Indeed, his relentless training continues to echo his sheer power and skill, recently crescendoing with a new personal bench press record of a stunning 212.5 kilograms (468.4 pounds).
Orhii’s Feat of Strength: A New Bench Press Record
Orhii’s competitive absence has not dimmed the spotlight on his outstanding commitment to powerlifting. Maintaining a strenuous training regime, Orhii set a new personal record on the bench press, lifting a staggering 212.5 kilograms (468.4 pounds) — a raw lift achieved with just wrist wraps for support. This demanding attempt not only underlined his unyielding determination but also showcased his flawless technique, further cementing his reputation as one of the elite powerlifters globally.

Charting New Horizons: Orhii’s IPF Comeback
In the grand theatre of powerlifting, Russel Orhii has performed on two major stages – the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) and the USA Powerlifting (USAPL). These federations, once unified, parted ways over discordant perspectives, compelling their athletes to choose between the two. Initially, Orhii chose to compete under the USAPL. However, he recently decided to shift his allegiance back to the IPF, a move he explained in a YouTube video.
In the video, Orhii stated, “I’m leaving the USAPL. The reason why I am leaving the USAPL is because I want to go back to being a World Champion Powerlifter… I decided to stay with the USAPL (in 2021), thinking that it would allow me to grow the business of the better brand… As I have done that, the IPF has taken bigger strides than the USAPL, with just the little things that kind of add to what it means to be a powerlifter.”
Orhii emphasized the IPF’s wider array of competitions as a key factor in his decision, a stark contrast to his former sole focus on the USAPL Nationals. This shift in perspective led Orhii to forgo his pursuit of a sixth USAPL National title and instead concentrate on excelling under the IPF.
Bracing for a New Challenge: The 2024 Powerlifting America Nationals
The schism between the USAPL and the IPF prompted the latter to establish Powerlifting America (AMP). AMP now hosts its own Nationals, serving as a qualification avenue for the World Championships. As Orhii revealed, transitioning to the IPF will necessitate a six-month suspension period, during which he won’t compete.
Orhii elaborated,“If I want to go to the IPF, I have to serve a six month suspension, and that starts whenever I reinstate myself. So, if I were to compete in the USAPL Nationals, I would then start my suspension. That would have made me eligible to compete in April of 2024. By that time, the AMP Nationals (Qualifier for 2024 IPF Worlds) would have already happened.”
This period of inactivity implies that Orhii will conclude 2023 without participating in a single sanctioned competition – a situation unseen since 2020. Nevertheless, he has set his sights on the 2024 Powerlifting America (AMP) Nationals, followed by the IPF World Championships, and eventually, the IPF World Games and IPF Sheffield.
Russel Orhii: Preserving Legacy and Charting Future Triumphs
With two IPF World Champion titles from 2019 and 2021 under his belt, Orhii’s primary goal is to reclaim this esteemed title in 2024. Despite speculation, he confirmed his commitment to the 83-kilogram weight class. This pivotal decision to shift toward the IPF seems a wise move, given the federation’s current influence in drug-tested powerlifting. As Orhii navigates this new chapter of his career, his steadfast devotion to the sport continues to dazzle and inspire the powerlifting community.
