Kevin Faires’ incredible grip strength and his ability to conquer the Dinnie Stones seems almost magical. At the 2023 Rogue Record Breakers event on March 5, he broke the world record for the Dinnie Stone Walk by carrying the stones a distance of 31 feet, seven inches. The Dinnie Stones have a combined weight of 734 pounds and are unevenly weighted with only thin metal rings for grip, presenting a significant challenge for competitors. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 25 feet, eight inches which Faires himself set at the same event one year prior.
The 2023 Rogue Record Breakers competition was the final event of the annual Arnold Sports Festival (ASF), which included the 2023 Arnold Classic (AC) and the 2023 Arnold Strongman Classic (ASC). Faires was not the only strongman competitor to achieve a record milestone during the proceedings.
Faires took advantage of the updated rulebook of the RRB competition to break his previous Dinnie Stone record. In the past, the athlete achieved the record by walking without interruption. However, the 2023 RRB allowed competitors to drop the stones once during the event before continuing the attempt. Faires dropped the Stones once and still managed to carry them even farther beyond his previous mark, extending his place in the record books.
For his impressive performance in the Dinnie Stone event, Faires was awarded a generous prize of $5,000. But for him, the recognition of having his name in the record books was perhaps worth more than the prize money.
Faires can add his latest accomplishment of breaking the Dinnie Stone walk record to his already impressive list of achievements. During the 2022 Strongman Rogue Invitational, he broke the Thor’s Hammer Deadlift World Record by lifting 147.4 kilograms (325 pounds). His lift surpassed former World’s Strongest Man champion Martins Licis, who lifted 136.3 kilograms (300 pounds) during a 2021 Rogue Invitational victory.
Although Faires has not won a contest since March 2017, his third-place finish in the 2022 Giants Live World Tour Finals is still a notable achievement. According to Strongman Archives, Faires has finished in the top five in six of his last eight competitions since June 2021.
When people get overwhelmed in life, they might hear the saying “get a grip.” Although it’s not explicitly stated, Faires’ recent incredible performance in the Dinnie Stone event suggests that he hasn’t struggled with this issue for a long time.
