Her ability to overcome challenges and continue to improve her performance has made her a force to be reckoned with in the sport, and her latest achievement only adds to her already impressive legacy.
Squat
Bonica Brown’s dominance in powerlifting can be largely attributed to her expertise in the squat, and her most recent performance at the 2023 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships showcased this strength. Brown’s first squat attempt, which was an impressive 262.5 kilograms (578.7 pounds), was considered relatively easy for the athlete, but it was a weight that many others could only dream of lifting.
Undeterred, Brown went on to exceed her previous World Record of 273.5 kilograms (603 pounds) with her second squat attempt, locking out an astonishing 274 kilograms (604 pounds). Yet, despite already breaking a World Record, Brown still had more to give.
For her final attempt, Brown decided to load an impressive 280 kilograms (617.3 pounds) onto the bar. To the amazement of onlookers, this weight proved to be no match for Brown, and she lifted the bar with apparent ease, setting a new IPF World Record in the process. Brown’s exceptional performance in the squat has solidified her status as one of powerlifting’s greatest athletes, and her World Record-breaking lifts will likely be remembered for years to come.

Bench Press
Despite a promising opening bench press lift of 140 kilograms (308.6 pounds), which hinted at the possibility of some massive lifts to come, Bonica Brown’s bench press ultimately proved to be her weakest event of the day. While Brown succeeded in setting new competition PRs in all her other lifts at the 2023 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships, her bench press was the only one in which she fell short.
Brown’s final bench press attempt, at 147.5 kilograms (325.1 pounds), was a disappointment for the athlete, as it was 7.5 kilograms (16.5 pounds) lighter than her greatest lift. Nonetheless, Brown’s remarkable performances in the squat and total lifts were enough to secure her new IPF World Records, cementing her place among powerlifting’s greatest athletes.

The risk paid off, as Brown flawlessly executed a raw 252.5-kilogram (556.6 pounds) deadlift just a few minutes later, bringing her incredible display of powerlifting to a triumphant close. Despite a disappointing bench press event, Brown’s record-breaking performances in the squat and total lifts, as well as her impressive showing in the deadlift, solidified her position as one of powerlifting’s most dominant and inspiring athletes.
