Alaska Woman’s Planet Fitness Membership Revoked; Planet Fitness Stocks Plummet
A Planet Fitness gym in Alaska stirred controversy by revoking a woman’s membership. Notably, she captured an image of a man shaving in the women’s locker room. Moreover, Patricia Silva found herself at the center of a heated debate. She shared her account of the incident in a video after leaving the gym.
“Good day. I just wanted to say that I came out of Planet Fitness and there is a man shaving in a woman’s bathroom. I realize he wants to be a woman. He gets to be a woman.
I love him in Christ. He’s a spiritual being having a human experience. He doesn’t like his gender so he wants to be a woman but I am not comfortable with him shaving in my bathroom. Alright? I thought I’s just say it out loud,” she said.
Also, in a subsequent video, Patricia Silva expressed feeling unsafe in the aftermath of the incident.
“It is rather disturbing. So I would like for you women to stand up and have a voice and stop the shenanigans. You have authority. Use your authority. I took that picture because I felt like I was in an unsafe space and so I am probably going to go report this to the police today. I just want to tell Samantha and Joe, who work there and own it, thank you so much for canceling my membership. You saved me the trip. Have a great day.”
Furthermore, Planet Fitness issued a statement clarifying its stance on gender identity and privacy, citing it as the reason for revoking Patricia Silva’s membership. However, according to the gym’s policy, capturing photographs of others in the facility is prohibited, contributing to Silva’s loss of membership.
“Our gender identity non-discrimination policy, states that members and guests may use the gym facilities that best align with their sincere, self-reported gender identity.
The member who posted on social media violated our mobile device policy that prohibits taking photos of individuals in the locker room, which resulted in their membership being terminated.”
Since the incident, Planet Fitness’ stock has dropped significantly, losing over $400 million as it fell from $66.92 to $56.46. Moreover, the gym’s handling of the situation has drawn criticism from many.
In the fitness community, prioritizing inclusivity and safety is crucial. Influencers like Joey Swoll actively promote harassment-free cultures, aiming for secure workout environments. Incidents like these, amplified by social media, highlight privacy and respect in public spaces. Engaging in dialogue about these matters is imperative.
