New details emerge after the death of 34-year-old Classic Physique bodybuilding star Neil Currey. Currey’s parents attribute his untimely death because of steroids. Furthermore, they state their beliefs during discussions with the coroner’s office at the Sheffield City Council.
Additionally, in September 2023, Currey – a rising star in the IFBB Pro League’s Classic Physique division, was found unresponsive at his home. This incident shocked the community. The Sheffield’s Medico-Legal Centre confirmed on Tuesday that Currey died from a mixture of methamphetamine and cocaine. However, his parents maintain that steroids played a role in his passing.

During discussions with assistant coroner Katy Dickinson, Nigel and Sandra Currey, his parents, disclosed that their son had always been athletic. However, he spiraled into a dark place due to substance abuse issues. They believe these issues worsened due to widespread steroid use in bodybuilding.
Neil Currey’s parents attribute his death to steroids
According to a written statement, the Chesterfield couple confirmed that Currey’s use of steroids ‘went off the scale,’ leading to him becoming ‘very isolated and depressed.’
Before his passing, Currey achieved a significant victory at the 2022 New York Pro, establishing himself in the league. Despite fulfilling his lifelong dream of competing on the 2022 Mr. Olympia stage, he did not place in the top 15.
Reiterating their stance, his parents emphasized that steroids played a role in his untimely passing:
“It is accepted practice throughout the body building fraternity to take these drugs.
Without the use of steroids it is impossible to compete, although this is called ‘cheating’ in any other sport,” they shared.
Assistant coroner Katy Dickinson ruled Neil Currey’s death as drug-related on Tuesday. His parents continue to mourn the loss and acknowledge that their lives have been permanently changed.
“He would light up the room when he entered it and he had a wonderful smile that lit up his face,” they said.
“He is terribly missed and our lives will never be the same again.”
Many view steroid use in bodybuilding as creating a perilous environment for competitors. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a seven-time Mr. Olympia and bodybuilding legend, has labeled bodybuilding as one of the most dangerous sports in the world.

Bodybuilding influencer Jo Lindner tragically passed away in 2023 at the age of 29, in addition to Neil Currey. Furthermore, though Lindner’s death is attributed to an aneurysm, some speculate steroids or the Covid-19 vaccine played a role. This speculation arose particularly after Lindner mentioned ‘heavy metals’ in his blood.
In honor of Neil Currey’s passing, a charity has established a fund for an educational program. This program aims to warn young people in Derbyshire schools about the dangers associated with steroid use.
