The anticipation leading up to the 2023 Mr. Olympia is always fraught with surprises, often including the sudden withdrawal of anticipated competitors. Women’s bodybuilding mainstay, Kristina Mendoza, has become one such unexpected absence. Recently, an emotional Instagram update from Mendoza revealed her decision, attributing it to her body not reacting as desired during the preparation phase.
A Glimpse into Mendoza’s Resilient Journey
Since her foray into bodybuilding in 2016, Kristina Mendoza’s journey has been characterized by a commitment to refining her physique. This dedication bore fruit when, after consistently securing positions in the top five, she targeted the coveted Pro card. Her debut attempt at the 2018 Chicago Pro almost clinched it, but she had to settle for second place. Rather than being deterred, this close call fueled Mendoza’s drive.

Determined and undaunted, Mendoza made her triumphant return at the 2019 IFBB Chicago Pro, clinching the first spot and, with it, her Pro card. Riding the wave of this victory, she plunged into the 2019 IFBB Pro Rising Phoenix just nine weeks later. This hasty decision might have led to her 16th place finish, but it also highlighted a trait integral to her success: resilience.
Kristina Mendoza Bows Out of 2023 Olympia, Extends Emotional Note to Supporters
The bodybuilding community eagerly watched as Kristina Mendoza dominated at the 2023 Chicago Pro, clinching the top spot and securing her ticket to the Olympia. However, her journey took a turn at the Rising Phoenix Arizona Pro in September, where she settled for the eighth position.
Kristina’s rigorous training and unwavering commitment throughout the year made her a favorite for many. Yet, internal struggles and personal dissatisfaction with her results led her to make a heart-wrenching decision. Sharing her sentiments on Instagram, Mendoza revealed her choice to step back from the imminent Olympia competition, leaving fans and followers both supportive and saddened by the news.
Hello friends, fans, and family.
I am heartbroken to announce that….
*I will not be competing at this years 2023 Mr. Olympia.*
Long story short, many of you know that I have been on prep since January and at this point in time my body is no longer cooperating nor responding to prep. As much as I have dreamed and worked to be on that Olympia stage, I will not allow ego nor outside influence dictate my decision. I do not solely want to step on the Olympia stage due to the fact that I have qualified… I want to be at my very best when I do so.
It was not an easy choice to make, but I have come to peace with my decision.
Sometimes all you can do is leave it in Gods hands and rest.
Thankful and grateful for the continuous love and support. 🙏🏽✨” Kristina Mendoza wrote.
