Jeremy Buendia’s return to the Olympia stage this year marked a significant moment after a prolonged hiatus. Despite showcasing an impressive combination of conditioning and structural prowess, he fell short of securing the Men’s Physique title at the 2023 Mr. Olympia. In a recent YouTube video, Buendia candidly shared his sentiments about this year’s competition and outlined his plans for the upcoming 2024 season.
Having taken a break from the sport following his loss to Brandon Hendrickson in 2018, Buendia, a former four-time Men’s Physique champion, generated considerable excitement among fans when he announced his comeback to the Olympia stage late last year.
This year’s competition posed a formidable challenge for Buendia, requiring him to face not only Hendrickson once again but also the then-Olympia champion, Erin Banks. Despite sharing updates on his physique and a detailed account of his full day of eating, Buendia’s bid for the throne or a spot within the top five proved elusive.

At the 2023 Mr. Olympia, all athletes delivered impressive performances, but it was Ryan Terry and Brandon Hendrickson who particularly caught the judges’ eyes. In the end, Terry secured the 2023 Men’s Physique title. Buendia, securing the eighth spot in the top ten, openly expressed disappointment with his results.
Jeremy Buendia Aims for Redemption at 2024 Mr. Olympia Following Disappointing 2023 Performance
After expressing dissatisfaction with his results at the 2023 Mr. Olympia, Jeremy Buendia recently shared his reflections and outlined plans for improvement in a YouTube video, setting his sights on a triumphant return at the 2024 Mr. Olympia.
“I want to give you guys a brief update, Olympia was a great experience overall. Obviously, I didn’t place where I wanted to but going into this Olympia I knew it was going to be a challenge and I knew I was facing some of the best athletes I’ve ever seen on stage in my life and that’s what it was. The guys that I was competing against were amazing. I gotta step my game up. I gotta bring a better package. I gotta time things differently” Buendia said.
Amidst formidable competition, Buendia acknowledged feeling subpar during the crucial morning judging session, recognizing its paramount significance. Despite the less-than-ideal circumstances, he maintains a pragmatic perspective, understanding that plans may not always unfold seamlessly. Buendia is determined to elevate his performance, gearing up to present an even more impressive package on the stage in the upcoming year.
“We didn’t necessarily come in at 100% and that’s something that’s kind of been sitting on me a little bit heavy is that I didn’t bring the best physique I’ve had this prep to the stage. That’s just part of the bodybuilding. Sometimes you hit it on time and sometimes you don’t and unfortunately in the morning we missed the mark and that’s when most of the judging gets done.”
The events of this year provided Jeremy Buendia with the encouragement he needed, serving as a powerful reminder that he possesses the resilience and capability to stage a comeback and ultimately reclaim the title of Men’s Physique Olympia champion.
“So, it’s a learning experience. The thing is I see that I’m still there. I’m still capable and I can still see myself moving up and winning the Mr. Olympia title. It is still something that is very possible so I just gotta continue to get back to work this year. Make some adjustments in my off-season and get better.”

With a resolute mindset, Buendia is more motivated than ever to showcase his best performance next year, setting his sights on clinching the coveted 2024 Men’s Physique Olympia title.
“I appreciate your guys’ support along this way. I feel like we all have grown together and 2024 is a new year and it’s going to be a new me and we’re going to continue to get better and I’m coming after that title in 2024.”
The 2023 Mr. Olympia proved to be a year marked by unexpected twists and upsets. Even before its commencement, the bodybuilding community witnessed the withdrawal of top athletes like Nick Walker due to a hamstring tear, significantly impacting the Men’s Open division. The event itself witnessed the dethroning of seven champions, including the reigning Mr. Olympia, Hadi Choopan, who reluctantly handed over the crown to Derek Lunsford.
Derek Lunsford’s victory at the 2023 Mr. Olympia etched his name in history as the first-ever two-division champion, having previously secured the 212 title. While celebrating this remarkable achievement, Lunsford and his family have faced substantial criticism regarding the results, with Lunsford disclosing the receipt of threats, an alarming extension to include his family.
Undoubtedly, the reverberations of the 2023 Mr. Olympia will linger among fans and athletes alike, becoming a topic of fervent discussion. As the dust settles, the anticipation for the next year’s Olympia builds, scheduled for October 10-13 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
