Jay Cutler Explains Why Food Is ‘The Hardest Part’ of Bodybuilding
To maintain his physique, Cutler sticks to a strict diet rich in proteins like chicken, steak, and eggs. Surprisingly, he recently tried KFC for the first time but wasn’t impressed.
In a recent YouTube video, Cutler, a four-time Mr. Olympia winner, discussed the challenges of bodybuilding, specifically the demanding dietary requirements.
“What’s the hardest part about bodybuilding and I always said the food. It’s like now I’m having trouble getting enough food in. Yeah, my appetite is good but it’s just making the time to actually prep the food consistently enough.”
“Especially when I’m moving around a lot. I mean I bring food to my office. I have my meals but I just wish I could be on five meals every single day. Five is sufficient.”
Cutler notes that while some individuals may not prioritize healthy eating, he had to adhere to a strict diet to excel in bodybuilding.
“I think certain people can compete on anything I think it depends on their genetics. The shake thing is the biggest question mark right? If shakes count as much. I mean, you remember when I was training for ’01 I was having protein powder and rice and everything” Jay Cutler said.
“I almost won 2001 so I would eat some whole meals, but I was definitely having after training protein before bed sometimes if I didn’t have egg whites. I always thought egg whites were probably the best before-bed digestible.”
“Some people eat steak because they feel like it’s going to keep me fuller, but for me, I’ve always liked doing the egg whites. That’s what Chris always had me on especially since the first diet.”
Cutler initially consumed five to six meals daily but increased to seven upon working with Hany Rambod. He made dietary adjustments, switching from oatmeal to cream of rice or grits for better digestion.
“I’ve always been on six meals, I mean Hany bumped me to seven. So, you know, that’s the common question is what’s the difference when I did all those years with Chris and then I did 09, and 10, seven meals.”
“I switched to eating grits. Oatmeal for whatever always bogged my stomach down. I don’t know if it was the gluten but I started eating cream of rice or grits. It was faster digestible.”
