The Indian bodybuilding community is mourning a tremendous loss. Varinder Singh Ghuman, a celebrated IFBB Pro Bodybuilder, Mr. India champion, and Bollywood actor, has died at the age of 47. According to reports from Colosseum Strength, he suffered a cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment at Fortis Hospital in Amritsar.
Meanwhile, sources close to the family confirmed that Ghuman had been admitted for a shoulder procedure before complications arose. However, despite rapid medical intervention, he could not be revived. Therefore, his death sent shockwaves through India’s fitness and film circles.
Originally from Punjab, Ghuman rose to international prominence as a trailblazer in bodybuilding. More importantly, he achieved global recognition as the world’s first vegetarian IFBB Pro bodybuilder. In a sport built on heavy meat-based diets, he shattered expectations and proved that elite physiques could be built through discipline and plant-based nutrition.

Ghuman’s rise to fame began with his victory at Mr. India 2009, followed by a strong runner-up finish at Mr. Asia that same year. Later, Ghuman ventured into cinema, where his imposing stature and screen presence earned him roles in Kabaddi Once Again, Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans, and Marjaavaan. Eventually, he reached Bollywood’s big stage, appearing alongside Salman Khan in Tiger 3. His performances bridged the worlds of sport and entertainment with ease.
In addition, Ghuman became a national ambassador for vegetarian fitness and ethical training practices. Frequently, he attended fitness expos, public events, and seminars to promote healthy lifestyles among India’s youth. Through his advocacy, he showed that determination and discipline could thrive without compromise.
Tributes
After his passing, tributes flooded social media. Punjabi singer Mankirt Aulakh expressed deep sadness, writing,
“Gone too soon, a legend who inspired so many of us to stay disciplined and proud of our roots.”
His words reflected the respect Ghuman commanded both inside and outside the gym.
Similarly, veteran actress Nirmal Rishi shared a heartfelt message, stating,
“Varinder was not only a powerhouse on screen but also a beautiful soul who encouraged others to live strong and kind.”
Her tribute captured the warmth and humility that defined his personality.
Moreover, fans and fellow athletes across India echoed similar emotions. Many called him a “trailblazer,” a
“true vegetarian warrior,” and a “symbol of strength and simplicity.”
