Right out of the gate, Rayno Nel 🇿🇦 shocked the world. Rayno Nel considered a rookie at the 2025 World’s Strongest Man, he came in quietly and left as the champion. Ultimately, he cemented his legacy.
| Rank | Athlete | Points | Flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rayno Nel | 47 | 🇿🇦 |
| 2 | Tom Stoltman | 46.5 | 🏴 |
| 3 | Mitchell Hooper | 43.5 | 🇨🇦 |
After qualifying, even Tom’s older brother Luke Stoltman wasn’t hyped to win. Instead, he said his goal was just to make the finals and support Tom’s bid for a fourth title. Luke is Britain’s Strongest Man and a six-time WSM finalist, but he knew he wasn’t in the running for the podium.
Similarly, that mindset spread through much of the field. Competitors like Thomas Evans, Eddie Williams, Ondrej Fojtů, and Paddy Haynes openly said their main goal was simply to reach the finals. In other words, winning the championship was not the immediate focus.
Then, Rayno Nel flipped the script. From rookie to king. Honestly, nobody saw it coming. Now, the world knows his name.
Rayno Nel Wins 2025 World’s Strongest Man Title
Rayno Nel wasn’t considered a top contender. Still, he calmly won his Qualifying Stage group with ease, just like Hooper and Tom Stoltman. Going into the WSM Finals, Nel ranked third. Meanwhile, Hooper and Stoltman held the top two spots. This only fueled the narrative that it was their show — and the rest were just background players.

However, that story started to crack when Nel won the KNAACK Carry & Hoist. That victory tied him with Stoltman and Hooper atop the leaderboard. Yet, the spotlight remained on the two former champions, locked in a fierce battle.

Then came the 18″ Max Deadlift. Hooper and Stoltman both tied for third, with most of the field. Suddenly, Nel pulled ahead, building a three-point lead. The strongman world was caught off guard. The force they had overlooked was now in front of them.
Rayno Nel Seized the Moment
When Hooper and Stoltman stumbled in the Hercules Hold, Nel seized the moment. He took second place behind a WSM record set by Williams. That performance gave Nel a seven-point lead over Hooper with just two events left. The gap seemed insurmountable. It looked like Nel had the title locked.

But then, everything shifted. Nel missed his second lift in the Flintstone Press Max event. Hooper and Stoltman gained ground, scoring third and first place. Suddenly, Nel’s lead shrank to just 2.5 points. Only the Atlas Stones remained.

The competition transformed. It was no longer a duel between Hooper and Stoltman. Nor was it a story of Nel’s surprise charge. Instead, it became a three-way battle for the podium.
In the Atlas Stones, Hooper set a blistering pace — four stones in just over 31 seconds. Nel knew the time to beat, assuming Stoltman would win as usual. The tension grew when Nel failed to load the fifth stone. He had to wait for the judges’ decision. Could he become the first South African to claim the WSM title?

Nel’s final time: four stones in 30.17 seconds. That was enough to beat Stoltman by half a point. Rayno Nel was crowned the 2025 World’s Strongest Man.
