Sam Sulek addressed one of bodybuilding’s most persistent challenges: body image struggles. Consequently, Sam Sulek spoke openly about topics like body dysmorphia and bigorexia in a recent video on April 8, 2026. Moreover, his comments offered insight into how even rising athletes navigate mental pressure.

Next, his perspective comes during a pivotal stage in his career. Therefore, Sulek continues to establish himself in the Classic Physique division. In addition, he has already built momentum with a win at the NPC Legends Classic, which helped him earn his IFBB Pro card in Columbus, Ohio.

Then, his competitive run adds context to his message. As a result, he made his Pro debut at the Arnold Classic Ohio, where he placed eighth against a stacked lineup that included Wesley Vissers and Matheus Menegate. Furthermore, he followed that performance with a seventh-place finish at the Arnold Classic UK.

Finally, with time to reflect, Sulek shifted focus to mental health and self-perception. Accordingly, he explained how he deals with negative talk and body image struggles. Ultimately, his message centered on finding balance between improvement and self-acceptance.

Sam Sulek explains the fine line between critique and body dysmorphia & Bigorexia

Sam Sulek broke down the difference between improving your physique and falling into negative thinking. Consequently, he emphasized that wanting to improve does not mean rejecting your current self. Moreover, he pointed out that many athletes struggle to separate the two.

Next, he explained how easy it is to misinterpret self-criticism. Therefore, athletes often push themselves without recognizing when thoughts turn harmful. In addition, this mindset can blur the line between discipline and insecurity.

Then, his perspective reflects a broader issue in bodybuilding. As a result, many competitors constantly chase perfection. Furthermore, that pursuit can sometimes lead to distorted self-image.

“Are we talking bigorexia? You never think you look good, even when maybe you really do? It’s kind of a fine line between critiquing your physique and telling yourself okay, I do have things I want to work on that I don’t like about myself currently. That doesn’t mean that I’m not valuable as me but I want to work on this.”

Sam Sulek identified negative self-talk as the core issue behind body image struggles. Consequently, he explained that people naturally frame their goals in a negative way. Moreover, even positive ambitions can become self-critical thoughts.

Next, he illustrated how mindset shapes perception. Therefore, a goal like gaining muscle can quickly turn into dissatisfaction. In addition, this pattern affects beginners and experienced athletes alike.

Then, he emphasized the importance of changing that internal dialogue. As a result, controlling how you speak to yourself becomes essential. Furthermore, this approach supports both mental health and physical progress.

“The problem is that thought process is always very negative. It’s hard to say. Imagine I’m a really skinny guy and I’m thinking, man, I want to put some muscle on. It’s easy to think man, I’m not big enough. Something about our own perception, we always spin things negative.”

“I want to lose weight is always taken as I don’t like how heavy I am now. So, just try not to beat yourself up. My main tip there is be your own worst critic, but don’t be your own worst hater.”

Even elite bodybuilders struggle with body image

Sam Sulek stressed that body image issues affect athletes at every level. Consequently, even top competitors are not immune to self-doubt. Moreover, he referenced examples from elite bodybuilding.

Next, this reality challenges common assumptions. Therefore, fans often believe success eliminates insecurity. In addition, Sulek made it clear that this is not the case.

Then, his insight highlights the mental demands of the sport. As a result, bodybuilding requires both physical and psychological resilience. Furthermore, acknowledging these struggles helps normalize the conversation.

“Even really high-level bodybuilders, they’ve said this in old training montage videos and stuff, and maybe they didn’t really mean it and they just said it because it sounded cool but I’ve seen videos of guys literally peak, looks like a total beast Olympia competitors in insane shape, and they are saying in this video, yeah, you know, all I see are the flaws man,” said Sam Sulek.

Sulek continues to refine his physique following recent competitions. Consequently, he has identified key areas for improvement, including back development. Moreover, his training adjustments reflect lessons learned onstage.

Next, his competition schedule has accelerated his growth. Therefore, appearances at the Arnold Classic Ohio and Arnold Classic UK provided valuable feedback. In addition, he is now refining both his diet and training strategy.

Then, his mindset aligns with his advice. As a result, he focuses on steady improvement rather than perfection. Furthermore, this balanced approach supports long-term success.
