Sam Sulek on Longevity, Mr. Olympia & the Arnold Era
Sam reflected on the pressure to move to Open. Next, he explained that fans expect him to chase Mr. Olympia. Additionally, he said that this expectation makes him think carefully about what he is willing to do.
“That’s one thing I’ll bring up because guys will ask me, are you going to move to Open? Or it’s can’t wait to see as Mr. Olympia, as though that’s the track that I’m on. For me, it’s more so what am I willing to do that adds to this whole thing with bodybuilding that will take me a certain degree of distance? Because if you’re a top-level Olympia competitor, that comes with its own things.”
Moreover, Sam explained that Olympia-level competition comes with sacrifices. Then, he said that he does not want to commit to that level until he is ready. Finally, he suggested that he would only do it if it felt right for his long-term goals.
“It’s not something to be pursued forever. Actually, the bigger I’ve gotten, the more I’ve started to be content with the size I already am.”
Additionally, Sam shared that his vision of his ideal physique has changed. Next, he admitted that chasing 300 pounds no longer appeals to him. Finally, he said that progress naturally changes what an athlete wants.
“I used to imagine 300-pound Sam Sulek. I was like, yeah, once I get to 300… but it’s something where you actually get to a different position just over time and through progress, you’re going to have a different perception of what you actually want.”
On the Arnold Era & Sport’s Evolution
Sam argued that bodybuilding is coming full circle. Next, he said that eras shape who the public trusts. Additionally, he explained that understanding these eras takes nuance.
“I think we’re about to come full circle. Because there’s been a progression since what we’d call the Golden Era of who is trustworthy. It requires some nuance to actually know the real answer.”
Moreover, he pointed to the Arnold Era as a turning point. Then, he described how fans followed workouts from massive stars. Finally, he explained how steroid awareness changed perceptions.
“The Arnold Era, Arnold was huge, all these bodybuilders were huge, they work out, I’m going to do their workout. Fast forward, fast forward, now these bodybuilders are getting extra big, they must be getting extra smart. Then queue Rocky IV, steroids are involved.”

Additionally, Sam broke down later eras. Next, he talked about the rise of the natural era and how it created new expectations. Finally, he said we are now in a science-driven era that values education and explanation.
“Queue the David Laid era, queue the natural era — these guys work out and they are just like me. These guys know what they are doing. Fast forward a little bit, and these guys are lying. This is the fake natural era. I can’t listen to these guys because they are not actually telling the truth about it. Now, we’re in the scientifically explainable era, where it’s not the gains that I have, it’s the training and the explanations why I do the training that I do, which makes me superior because I can explain it very well and I have different studies to support it.”
What It Means Going Forward
Sam made it clear that he will not rush into the Open division. Next, he said that his focus is on building a career that will last many years. Additionally, he plans to take careful steps rather than push for quick results that could harm him later.
Moreover, he said that his training will continue to evolve as he learns more. Then, he promised to share the reasoning behind his methods with his audience. Furthermore, he sees value in explaining the science behind what he does instead of just showing his results.
Finally, Sam plans to focus on consistency and gradual improvement. Next, he wants to bring up his physique in a way that is both safe and competitive. Ultimately, he believes this approach will let him have a long and successful career.
