Notable British bodybuilder, Ryan Terry, is embarking on his 2023 Olympia preparation with a remarkable level of determination and motivation. Fully engaged in a stringent training schedule and a meticulous diet plan, Terry aims to deliver a performance worthy of the illustrious bodybuilding stage that is Olympia. Recently, he shared a glimpse into his dedicated preparation journey, showcasing an intense back workout on his YouTube channel.

Ryan Terry: The Multi-Faceted Bodybuilder from Britain

Ryan Terry, a distinguished personality from the UK, is an accomplished professional bodybuilder, fitness model, and apparel ambassador. His impressive entry into the bodybuilding scene in the early 2010s saw him winning prestigious titles such as Mr. Britain and Mr. International. His career trajectory took an upward turn in 2014 when he secured his IFBB Pro card, making him a formidable contender in the Men’s Physique division of the IFBB Pro League.

Terry’s Legacy: Consistent High Ranks in Olympia

As a five-time Olympia participant, Terry almost claimed the Men’s Physique Olympia title in 2016, finishing an impressive second. Since then, he’s consistently made his presence felt in every Olympia event, securing a spot amongst the top seven competitors. Terry concluded the competitive 2022 season with a seventh-place finish at the Olympia.

A Recent Victory: Triumph at the 2023 New York Pro

Terry’s recent accomplishment at the 2023 New York Pro marks a significant highlight in his career. In the face of stiff competition from athletes such as Victor Chaves and Sidy Pouye, Terry emerged victorious, earning a direct invitation to the 2023 Olympia.

Terry’s Road to 2023 Olympia: Intense Preparation

Terry’s prep for the 2023 Olympia began sixteen weeks before the event. His goal is clear: to improve upon last year’s standing and establish himself as a potential challenger for Erin Banks’ Men’s Physique Olympia title.

In his latest YouTube video, Terry shares his rigorous back workout and provides an update on his competition preparation. As he navigates the next 15 weeks of intense training, it will be intriguing to follow Terry’s journey and witness how he prepares to challenge the Men’s Physique division once again.

Ryan Terry Balances 2023 Olympia Prep with Anticipated Parenthood

As he prepares for the 2023 Olympia, bodybuilder Ryan Terry is set to welcome another significant event into his life – impending fatherhood. Recorded just three days before the expected arrival of his baby, Terry’s latest video offers an update on his Olympia preparations amidst a flurry of home improvements in anticipation of his growing family.

Navigating Parenthood and Preparation: A Balancing Act

The task of preparing for an Olympia competition is daunting in itself, but coupled with the preparations for welcoming a new baby, it becomes a true test of balance and dedication. Terry, however, seems to be taking it all in stride, remaining focused on his bodybuilding goals even while busy making room for his expanding family.

The Crucial First Four Weeks: A Test of Discipline and Adaptability

Terry’s Olympia preparation started a week ago. Now, 15 weeks out from the 2023 Olympia, the 34-year-old acknowledges he’s not in a particularly comfortable place. The initial four weeks of preparation are vital, demanding the adaptation to a regimented diet of six meals per day and adjusting to increased food intake. This phase can be challenging, and Terry admits it’s not a comfortable position to be in. Yet, he remains undeterred, his commitment to his craft remaining steadfast despite the challenges.

“… Hoping my body composition will change, like, that way I’ll fill up, start to lose a bit of body fat but hold, maintain and even grow muscle in these four weeks,” Terry said

Efficient Preparation: Terry’s Strategy for the 2023 Olympia

A significant element of competition preparation is optimizing the body’s functioning before the arduous 12-week period when food intake gradually decreases. Currently weighing in at 220 lbs, Terry has already shed almost 5 lbs since the start of his preparation. He aims to maintain this weight for the next three weeks.

Terry’s physique appears to be developing appropriately at this stage. His wide lats, pronounced shoulders, and robust quads immediately draw attention, symbolizing the strength of his physique. Nonetheless, he acknowledges that a substantial amount of work lies ahead in the next 15 weeks to ensure a commendable performance at the 2023 Olympia.

Building a Strong Back: Terry’s Workout Regimen

Terry’s current training regimen includes two back sessions each week. He meticulously divides the exercises between these two days to ensure all parts of the back receive adequate attention.

The victorious 2023 New York Pro participant is now placing greater emphasis on free weight movements, recognizing his neglect of this aspect in recent years. Terry theorized that the density in his back muscles began to diminish due to this oversight. However, reintegrating these exercises before the 2023 New York Pro and the 2022 Olympia made a substantial difference.

Terry’s training now follows this trend, incorporating a balanced mix of machine and free weight exercises rather than relying solely on machines. His updated routine demonstrates a thoughtful strategy and the agility to adapt his training based on previous experiences and current needs.

Kickstarting the Session: Superset of Weighted Hyperextensions and Deadlifts

Terry’s training session commenced with an engaging superset consisting of weighted hyperextensions and deadlifts. He shared his rationale for incorporating hyperextensions as the initial exercise in the workout regimen.

“I’ve been hitting hyperextensions relatively early but trying to hit them every week. Honestly, I think this has brought a lot of thickness onto my lower back,” Terry said.

Striking a Balance: Combining Hyperextensions and Deadlifts

As age progresses, high-volume deadlifts have become increasingly challenging for Terry. In response to this, he has discovered that hyperextensions serve as a compelling alternative to accommodate some of that volume. Terry has smartly found a middle ground by merging the two exercises into a superset. This combination involves 15 repetitions of weighted hyperextensions, promptly followed by 15 repetitions of deadlifts using moderate weights. This strategic adjustment in his regimen reflects Terry’s adaptability and understanding of his body’s evolving needs and capabilities.

“The pump you get off this, makes that exercise, a deadlift, 10 times harder and it is unbelievable the pump you get,” He added.

Supercharged Supersets: Terry’s High-Intensity Back Workout

Terry typically commences his back workout with four sets of each exercise, executing 15 reps in quick succession to kick-start his training session.

Second Superset: High Rows and Wide Grip Lat Pulldown

Terry acknowledges that his Rhomboids, muscles in the upper back, are comparatively weaker. To address this, he initiates high rows with a pronated grip, effectively activating this upper back muscle to help it catch up with the development of the other back muscles. This exercise is immediately followed by a superset with wide grip lat pulldowns using a MAG bar, with Terry powering through each set at a high intensity.

Diversified T-Bar Rows: Working Different Back Muscles

Terry proceeds to perform several sets of T-bar rows using varying grips to target different parts of the back muscles. The first set utilizes a wide pronated grip, while the second set transitions to a close neutral grip, both performed with the same weight. Following this, he increases the weight and repeats the sets using similar techniques.

Past injuries to Terry’s lower back necessitate careful consideration during his workouts. The conventional form of T-bar rows, where the torso is horizontally aligned with the bar, places his lower back in a potentially vulnerable position. Terry elucidates his approach as follows:

“So I’m slightly less bent over where my back is always in that fixed position. So all I’m doing is pulling with my back. You’ve gotta find what’s best for you.”

Culminating with Bent Over Barbell Rows: The Final Exercise

Following the high-intensity T-bar row sets, Terry moved on to the final exercise for the day – bent over barbell rows.

Terry concluded his training session with several strong sets of bent over barbell rows. This compound exercise targets a host of major back muscles, including the latissimus dorsi, rhomboids, infraspinatus, trapezius, and teres muscles. After this exhaustive workout, Terry wrapped up his day at the gym, marking the end of a strenuous yet productive training session.

Full workout included:

  • Superset – Weighted Hyperextensions and Deadlifts
  • Superset – High Rows and Wide Grip Lat Pulldown
  • T-Bar Rows
  • Bent Over Barbell Rows
