Day 2 of the 2023 Arnold Strongman Classic.

Day one of the 2023 Arnold Strongman Classic.

The Arnold Strongman Classic‘s first day of competition commenced with the formidable Wheel of Pain, which was inspired by the iconic device used in Conan the Barbarian to develop the protagonist’s legendary strength and physique. The competitors were tasked with carrying a weighted bar around a fixed track for maximum distance within a 60-second time limit.

The last event of the day was a specialized log lift, where competitors had 90 seconds to perform as many repetitions as possible with either 195 kilograms (430 pounds) or 175 kilograms (385 pounds) for the men, and 122 kilograms (270 pounds) or 100 kilograms (220 pounds) for the women.

The points system favored the heavier weight, although some athletes may have opted for the lighter implement to achieve more total repetitions strategically.

Here are the results for the Women’s Wheel of Pain event:

  1. Rebecca Roberts – 28.27 meters
  2. Inez Carrasquillo – 19.53 meters
  3. Donna Moore – 19.02 meters
  4. Olga Liashchuk – 18.19 meters
  5. Samantha Belliveau – 15.93 meters
  6. Andrea Thompson – 15.8 meters
  7. Victoria Long – 14.33 meters
  8. Melissa Peacock – 12.04 meters

  10. Hannah Linzay – 11.2 meters

Here are the results for the Men’s Wheel of Pain event:

  6. Kevin Faires achieved 3 reps with a weight of 175 kilograms.

Carrasquillo heads into Day Two with a one-point lead after participating in two events. This year marks her debut at the Arnold Pro Strongwoman Classic, having previously won the Arnold Amateur Strongwoman competition in 2022. Despite the narrow margin, Carrasquillo currently holds the top position ahead of Olga Liashchuk, who has won the Arnold Pro Strongwoman Classic twice (in 2019 and 2020) and the 2022 World’s Strongest Woman title.

In the Men’s competition, Trey Mitchell, a two-time Shaw Classic champion (in 2021 and 2022), is leading by two and a half points after Day One, leaving Mitchell Hooper behind. Hooper, who won the 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic UK, is a strong contender for the title.

  • How Strongman Competitions are Scored

In Strongman competitions, scoring is based on the number of competitors and ranking within the field. The winner of an event is awarded points based on the number of competitors, with subsequent places receiving progressively fewer points.

For example, in a competition with 10 athletes, the winner would earn 10 points, second place would receive 9 points, third place would receive 8 points, and so on. In the event of a tie, the placing points are added and divided equally among the tied athletes. For instance, if two athletes tie for second place, they would each receive 8.5 points (9+8 divided by 2).
