Rayno Nel announced that he withdraws from the 2025 Strongest Man on Earth contest, a decision shaped by a mix of work commitments and limited recovery time.

Then, he explained why this was necessary. Nel, a director at an engineering firm, has long balanced a growing strongman career with a demanding professional life. The sport is brutal, and with a packed schedule, he felt that trying to do both posed too great a risk.

“I’m a director at an engineering firm. With some big projects happening right now, I have to balance everything. I’ve worked too hard over the past seven or eight years to sacrifice that for one more contest if I can’t be fully prepared.”

After that, he spoke openly about why he refused to compete unless he could give it his best. The Strongest Man on Earth is an elite test of strength that demands total focus. To Nel, entering underprepared would be unfair — both to himself and the contest.

“I don’t want to run away from it. It’s a contest I really want to prep for in the future and compete in when I can give it everything I have.”

Meanwhile, Nel reflected on how quickly he has risen in the strongman scene. Just two years ago, he was an unknown quantity. Today, he is the defending World’s Strongest Man and one of the biggest names in the sport. According to Colosseum Strength, in 2025 alone he claimed nine international victories across Strongman Champions League contests, including wins in Italy and Holland.

Moreover, Nel cemented his place in strongman history at the 2025 World’s Strongest Man. Against the best in the world — including former champions Tom Stoltman and Mitchell Hooper — Nel surged ahead and claimed the title by just half a point. The win made him the first South African to hoist the sport’s biggest trophy.

Then, looking back at that win, Nel said it felt surreal. Against long‑standing giants of the sport, he emerged victorious, relying not just on brute strength but a deep sense of discipline. His victory was a testament to years of relentless training, precision, and sacrifice.

“Winning the World’s Strongest Man changed my life. To stand on that podium as the first South African felt like a dream. It felt like proof that with enough grit and focus, anything is possible.”

Rayno Nel withdraws from the 2025 Strongest Man on Earth, pointing to “time and risk

Despite tasting the highest glory, Nel understands that strongman demands total devotion. Its brutal nature can leave athletes drained and injured, especially when combined with careers and family responsibilities.

Then, he explained why he had to step back from the Strongest Man on Earth contest for now.

“This is a contest I want to win one day. But it has to be when I can give it my best — when I can train for it the right way and give it the attention it deserves.”

Moreover, this decision has resonated deeply within the strongman community. Athletes and fans alike respect the choice, seeing it as an example for the next generation of strongmen. The sport has evolved. It no longer rewards reckless risk‑taking. Instead, it celebrates those who approach it with precision, discipline, and long‑term thinking.

Next, Nel spoke openly about how he came to that conclusion. The demands of strongman have changed over the years. The level of conditioning required is higher. Recovery, mobility, and mental sharpness matter as much as brute force.

“Strongman has evolved. It’s about precision and conditioning now. You have to approach it as a complete sport, and that means knowing when to step back, recover, and refocus.”

Then, he reflected on how the rise of strongman as a global sport has changed its nature. Today, the best athletes treat strongman like a full‑time job, investing countless hours into recovery, nutrition, and technique.

“It’s no longer about just lifting the heaviest weight. The best in the world now focus on recovery, movement, and discipline. To win at this level, you have to respect that process every step of the way.”

Meanwhile, he promised that this was not the end for him. Nel has every intention of returning to the Strongest Man on Earth when he can devote himself fully. The goal, he said, is not just to compete, but to win.

“I still have a lot more to prove in strongman. When the timing is right and I can commit fully, I’ll be back. And when I am, I’ll be competing to win.”

Finally, the strongman world will now watch and wait. Nel has proven that he can rise from obscurity to the top. By choosing restraint and discipline over impulse, he sends a message to the sport: greatness is built patiently, intentionally, and with total commitment. Strongman may evolve, but Rayno Nel’s drive and discipline remain timeless.
