At 74 years old, legendary bodybuilder and actor Lou Ferrigno continues to showcase the benefits of staying physically active later in life. In a Facebook post shared on May 20, 2026, Lou Ferrigno opened up about recovering from shoulder surgery and explained how maintaining strong physical condition helped him bounce back faster than expected.

Throughout the update, Ferrigno stressed that exercise becomes increasingly important with age, especially when dealing with injuries or surgeries involving joints and tendons. Moreover, he explained that staying in shape before surgery can dramatically improve the recovery process afterward.

Meanwhile, many fans were surprised to learn that Ferrigno underwent a significant operation last December involving a major tendon repair in his shoulder. Despite the seriousness of the procedure, he revealed that he has already regained excellent mobility and continues training consistently.

Now, Ferrigno remains committed to inspiring older generations through fitness, discipline, and healthy living. As a result, his latest recovery story quickly gained attention throughout the bodybuilding and fitness communities.

Lou Ferrigno Reveals Details About His Shoulder Surgery at 74

In the video, Ferrigno explained that he underwent shoulder surgery last December after suffering serious tendon damage. Furthermore, he revealed that doctors had to reattach nearly the entire tendon during the procedure.

“I’ve got to tell you something. Last December, like I mentioned before, I had shoulder surgery. I had 95% of my tendon reattached. I’ll tell you, people that have shoulder replacement, hip replacement, any kind of surgery when it comes to the joints, it’s very important to be in the best physical shape.”

Meanwhile, Ferrigno emphasized that entering surgery in strong physical condition made a major difference in how quickly he recovered. Because of his fitness level, he believes his rehabilitation progressed far faster than it otherwise would have.

Additionally, Ferrigno used his own experience to encourage older adults to remain active before health issues arise. In his view, strength and conditioning can help the body respond more effectively after surgery.

Ferrigno Says Fitness Helped Him Recover Faster

According to Ferrigno, many individuals spend months struggling through rehabilitation after undergoing joint-related surgeries. However, he explained that consistent training allowed him to regain movement and functionality more efficiently.

“I’ve seen that those who have had surgery, they would labor and rehab for months afterward to get the same condition back. But because I’m in good shape, I may come back knowing I can do these range of motions again all with 100 percent.”

Following the surgery, Ferrigno stated that he can already complete exercises with a full range of motion, including chest presses. Consequently, he remains optimistic about eventually returning to complete strength and mobility.

At the same time, Ferrigno credited decades of disciplined training for preparing his body to handle physical setbacks more effectively. Therefore, he continues treating exercise as an essential part of long-term health.

During the discussion, Ferrigno also explained how aging naturally affects connective tissues and tendons. Specifically, he noted that reduced blood flow can make tendons weaker and more vulnerable over time.

“When you age, you have the ability to embrace the aging process. What does that mean? After the age of 60, the tendons have less blood flow and the tendons tend to be more brittle.”

Because of these physical changes, Ferrigno believes older adults must remain proactive about maintaining their bodies. Consequently, he continues prioritizing regular workouts, movement, and recovery habits even at 74 years old.

Furthermore, Ferrigno explained that aging does not automatically mean losing physical ability. Instead, he believes consistent effort can help people preserve mobility, strength, and independence far longer than expected.

Ferrigno Says Exercise Helps Him Feel Decades Younger

At 74, Ferrigno believes his training habits have helped him maintain a youthful appearance and energy level. In fact, he credited regular exercise as one of the main reasons he still feels physically capable.

“I’m 74 now because I’m exercising so well, once a night, eat, that’s why I can look like a person that’s 55 or even 45. Men my age who don’t exercise look older, especially when it comes paying attention to the body. Maximum health, maximum mental attitude, and maximum physical effort.”

Meanwhile, Ferrigno contrasted his condition with individuals who avoid exercise later in life. According to him, inactivity can accelerate both physical decline and visible aging.

Beyond appearance, Ferrigno also highlighted the mental benefits of training consistently. As a result, he continues encouraging people of all ages to prioritize physical activity for both body and mind.

Long before becoming a television icon, Ferrigno built his reputation as one of the most imposing physiques of bodybuilding’s Golden Era. Standing over 6-foot-5 with massive shoulders and legs, he became one of the few athletes capable of challenging the sport’s elite stars.

During his competitive career, Ferrigno shared stages with legends such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane, and Robby Robinson. Consequently, his size and stage presence made him one of the most recognizable bodybuilders of the 1970s.

Later, Ferrigno successfully transitioned into acting and became globally famous starring in the television series The Incredible Hulk from 1978 to 1982. Much like Schwarzenegger, he transformed bodybuilding success into a long-lasting entertainment career.

Lou Ferrigno Still Prioritizes Fitness at 74 after shoulder surgery

Even decades after his bodybuilding prime, Ferrigno continues training regularly and frequently shares workout clips and physique updates online. Recently, he showed off a ripped six-pack and credited proper eating, sleep, and consistent exercise for his longevity.

At the same time, Ferrigno continues using his platform to encourage healthy aging through movement and discipline. Because of that, many older fitness fans view him as one of bodybuilding’s strongest examples of lifelong dedication.

Moreover, his recovery from shoulder surgery reinforced his belief that staying active remains essential for preserving overall health and quality of life. Therefore, Ferrigno continues proving that age does not have to prevent people from training hard and living actively.
