The 2024 CrossFit Games began on August 8th in Fort Worth, Texas. However, the opening event took a tragic turn. During the swimming portion of the first workout, Serbian athlete Lazar Đukić disappeared at 2024 CrossFit Games. Lastly, he never crossed the finish line and was last seen in the water.
The initial event required athletes to run 3.5 miles before swimming 800 meters. After the exhausting run, the swimming segment proved especially challenging. Most competitors finished within 40 minutes, but Đukić vanished during the swim.
Organizers quickly delayed the next Teams event, scheduled to follow the Individuals’ competition. They later canceled it. The livestream also disappeared when viewers saw Đukić struggling in the water near the finish line.
Emergency services and search teams arrived shortly after. Organizers directed spectators to leave while they searched for Đukić, casting a somber shadow over the start of the 2024 CrossFit Games.

According to WFAA, rescue teams were observed retrieving what appeared to be a body from the water.

If the worst has happened and the athlete did drown, several factors could be at play. Swimming in lakes, for instance, presents dangers such as cold temperatures and hidden obstacles. Additionally, the water conditions themselves can be treacherous.
Furthermore, observers note that Lazar Đukić had just completed a grueling 3.5-mile run before the swim. Consequently, this strenuous exercise might have led to cramps or other issues, which could have compromised his performance and safety in the water.

Instagram Reaction

Lazar Đukić and his brother, Luka Đukić, had previously tested the run and swim course at the 2024 CrossFit Games venue. Luka shared a video of their practice session on Instagram, highlighting their preparation.

In addition, Lazar Đukić’s experience in water polo indicates he was well-acquainted with swimming. This background would have contributed to his confidence in the water.
However, CrossFit has not yet confirmed any details about the situation. Furthermore, we will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.
