One of the sport’s most respected names, Kamal Elgargni, has officially withdrawal from the 2023 Mr. Olympia. His decision, announced due to pressing family matters, comes as a major shake-up in the IFBB Pro League’s 212 division. Notably, Elgargni’s absence opens the field for new contenders just weeks before the contest.
Indeed, Elgargni’s record speaks volumes. Since his Olympia debut in 2018, he has never finished outside the top three. He claimed third place in 2018, seized the 212 Olympia title in 2019, and followed with silver in 2020 and bronze in 2021. Each of these performances solidified his place among the division’s all-time greats.
More recently, Elgargni expanded his footprint by entering Men’s Open competitions. He held his own in deep lineups at the 2022 Texas Pro and Tampa Pro. Still, his heart remained with the 212 division. In fact, he returned to it at the 2022 Olympia, where he earned yet another podium finish. Now, with his exit from this year’s contest, fans await to see who will rise in his absence.

The 2023 Arnold Classic saw Elgargni challenging some of the Open Division’s best, where he finished ninth. His last conquest was at the 2023 Master’s Olympia, a contest he dominated. While Elgargni’s choice of division for the 2023 Olympia remained under wraps, recent updates showcased a physique that seemed primed for the stage. However, personal exigencies have now reshaped his professional trajectory for this year.
Elgargni Prioritizes Family, Withdrawal from 2023 Olympia
In a heartfelt Instagram announcement, Kamal Elgargni has revealed his decision to abstain from participating in the 2023 Olympia. The bodybuilding community was eagerly anticipating his dual participation, as Elgargni had qualified for both the 212 and the Men’s Open divisions. But, life had other plans.
Delving into his personal predicament, Elgargni highlighted that the health of a loved one took precedence over his professional aspirations. His brother’s ongoing struggle with cancer became the poignant reason for him to set the stage aside and stand by his family.
He elaborated:
“After winning the Masters Olympia, I went back home. Sadly I had my older brother, he had cancer that became like a sarcoma.”
Elgargni added:
“I really decided I’m not going to be at the Olympia this year. So I know It’s a massive year for me. I’m qualified for both 212 and the open. But family is family. So I’m really really sad for that to happen again. But again, it’s my family. I needed to be with my brother. Let’s hope, we pray for him. He’s gonna be soon because I wanted to be at the Olympia but the good thing’s next year!”
