Heading into the 2023 CrossFit Games in Madison, Wisconsin, Justin Medeiros had one clear objective in mind: to clinch a third consecutive Men’s title. This ambitious aim, however, seemed to be hanging by a thread after his surprisingly lackluster performance in the initial stages of the competition. The unexpected turn of events placed Medeiros in 29th and 37th spots in the first two events, “Ride” and “Pig Chipper,” raising questions about his ability to repeat his prior victories.
Medeiros and the ‘Ride’: An Unexpected Collision Leads to a Disappointing Finish
The 2023 Individual CrossFit Games set off with the “Ride” event, which saw athletes pitted against each other in a grueling race to complete as many laps as possible within a 40-minute window on a Trek Bikes Marlin 8 mountain bike. However, Medeiros’ participation in this event was marked by an unfortunate series of incidents. He found himself involved in two separate collisions with competitor Lazar Đukić, leading to falls that significantly impeded his performance.
Medeiros shed light on the nature of these mishaps in a recent video interview with the Buttery Bros on their YouTube channel. According to Medeiros, Đukić was seemingly responsible for both crashes. In the first incident, Đukić appeared to have stepped on one of his pedals too hard, causing Medeiros to slow down and subsequently crash. The exact nature of the crash remains unclear, leaving spectators wondering whether it was a side or a rear-end collision.
The second incident occurred when Medeiros was attempting to maintain an inside track on Đukić. This maneuver, Medeiros claimed, didn’t sit well with Đukić who seemed to be trying to eliminate this advantage. The resulting collision led to another fall for Medeiros, contributing to his sub-par finish.
“I don’t think he [Đukić] wanted me to be on the inside, so he tried to squeeze me out,” Medeiros said. “I could have braked and gone around him, but I didn’t want to brake … I don’t think either of us wanted to fall, so I don’t think either one of [the collisions] was on purpose.”
Pig Chipper: A Visibly Shaken Medeiros Stumbles Further
After the unfortunate incident in the “Ride” event, Medeiros found himself battling not just physical fatigue but also the psychological impact of the earlier collisions. This was evident in the following “Pig Chipper” event, where a visibly shaken Medeiros managed to recover only enough for a 37th-place finish. This constituted the worst workout result of his young but stellar career, further threatening his chances of clinching a third title. On the other hand, Đukić managed to bounce back from the biking mishap, securing second place behind overall leader, Roman Khrennikov.

Despite the rough start, Medeiros is far from finished. With less than two days remaining in the 2023 Games, the idea of another title for Medeiros might seem a bit far-fetched, yet it is not entirely out of the question. The reigning champion managed to make the cut and will remain a participant all the way through Sunday’s Final.

Overview
In a turn of events that left spectators and fans in disbelief, Justin Medeiros, aiming for a third consecutive Men’s title at the 2023 CrossFit Games, found himself grappling with setbacks right from the beginning. A pair of unfortunate collisions during the “Ride” event, followed by a visibly strained performance in the “Pig Chipper” event, saw Medeiros placing far from the top spots. Despite the initial hiccups, the two-time champion remains in the game, with his sights set on a strong finish on the final day. Whether Medeiros can bounce back from this challenging start to claim a third title remains to be seen.
