Powerlifter Jonathan Cayco had a disappointing outcome at the 2022 IPF World Championships, failing to defend his title. However, he emerged from the experience more motivated than ever, as evidenced by his social media posts. Nine months later, Cayco participated in the 2023 IPF Sheffield Powerlifting Championships and delivered an exceptional performance. He set new IPF World Records in Bench Press and Total, while also earning a substantial amount of money.

The 2023 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships featured several powerlifting legends, including Jesus Olivares, Amanda Lawrence, and Bonica Brown. All of them exceeded previous World Records, making it one of the greatest competitions in the sport’s history.

Squat

Jonathan Cayco entered the 2023 IPF Sheffield Powerlifting Championships well aware of the challenges that lay ahead. With several world champions competing in the event, he knew that a successful squat could set him up for the rest of the competition. To that end, he chose to begin with a 285-kilogram (622.8 pounds) squat, before increasing the weight to 300 kilograms (661.4 pounds) for his second attempt. His third and final attempt at 302.5 kilograms (666.9 pounds) was unsuccessful, resulting in a missed lift.

Bench Press

Jonathan Cayco, a powerlifter who has earned the nickname Mr. Bench, had a clear goal in mind coming into the Sheffield Powerlifting Championships. He knew that a strong performance in the squat event was crucial to his overall success, given the level of competition he was up against. With this in mind, he started with a 285-kilogram squat before moving up to 300 kilograms for his second attempt. While he missed his final attempt at 302.5 kilograms, his performance up to that point set the tone for the rest of the day.

As someone who had earned the moniker Mr. Bench, it was no surprise that the second event of the day held a special place in Jonathan Cayco’s heart. He started with an impressive 230 kilograms, and it quickly became clear that he was gunning for a new world record. With little difficulty, he breezed through his second attempt at 239 kilograms, setting himself up for a historic final lift. On his third attempt, Cayco managed to lift an astonishing 241.5 kilograms, setting a new IPF World Record and cementing his status as one of the greatest powerlifters of all time.

Jonathan Cayco is no stranger to world records, having set a number of them throughout his career. In fact, he held the previous IPF World Record for bench press going into the Sheffield Powerlifting Championships. At the 2022 IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships, he managed to bench press an impressive 238.5 kilograms. However, at the 2023 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships, he managed to surpass even that feat, lifting 241.5 kilograms and cementing his place in the record books.

  • 230 kilograms (507 pounds)
  • 239 kilograms (526.9 pounds)
  • 241.5 kilograms (532.4 pounds) — U93KG IPF World Record

Deadlift

Jonathan Cayco demonstrated his powerlifting prowess in the final event of the competition, the deadlifts. Despite his impressive performances in the previous two events, Cayco knew that he still needed to excel in the deadlifts to secure a top-three overall finish. He started with a relatively light 320-kilogram (705.4 pounds) pull, but increased the weight to 337.5 kilograms (744.1 pounds) for his second attempt.

In order to clinch third place overall, Cayco still had to add a few more pounds to his lift. Therefore, he went for a 342.5-kilogram (755 pounds) deadlift on his final attempt, which he successfully completed. His excellent deadlift performance contributed significantly to his overall success at the 2023 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships, where he set two new IPF World Records and earned a considerable sum of money.

  • 320 kilograms (705.4 pounds)
  • 337.5 kilograms (744 pounds)
  • 342.5 kilograms (755 pounds)
  • Total — 884 kilograms (1,948.9 pounds) — U93KG IPF World Record

In addition to setting new world records in squat and bench press, Jonathan Cayco also exceeded the IPF Total World Record by 5.5 kilograms (12.1 pounds) at the 2023 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships. The previous record was held by Chance Mitchell, who amassed a weight of 878.5 kilograms (1,936.8 pounds) at the 2022 IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships. With a total of 884 kilograms (1,948.1 pounds), Cayco established himself as the new record holder and proved his dominance in the sport.
