The 2023 IPF World Juniors and Sub-Juniors Classic Championships in Cluj Napoca, Romania, between August 24th and September 3rd, provided the stage for young powerlifters to dazzle spectators. The competition not only showcased raw strength but also hinted at the future icons of the sport.
Jonah Wiendieck: A New Record Setter
Among the parade of potential, Jonah Wiendieck, a mere 23 years old, captured significant attention. He didn’t just compete; he set a new benchmark with a staggering 250.5-kilogram (552.3-pound) Bench Press IPF Junior World Record. This young prodigy started impressively, easing through a 235-kilogram (518.1-pound) lift, and soon after, raised the bar to 245.5 kilograms (541.2 pounds) – effortlessly setting an initial record.
Eclipsing Previous Benchmarks
Before this championship, Dmytro Vovk held the accolade for the heaviest U120KG IPF Bench Press Junior World Record, achieved during the 2019 IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships with a lift of 240.5 kilograms (530.2 pounds). Jonah’s third attempt not only outshone his own prior lift but also eclipsed Vovk’s record, marking a new high for the category.

A Stellar Yet Bittersweet Performance
Jonah’s display at the championship was nothing short of spectacular. Landing each of his nine attempts, he showcased precision and strength that belied his age. Yet, despite his monumental achievements, Jonah had to content himself with a silver medal. The gold eluded him by the slimmest of margins, just 0.5 kilograms (1.1 pounds). Although he led for the majority of the competition, El Chaer Etienne’s concluding deadlifts clinched the first place. Still, Jonah’s record-setting lifts and his personal bests across categories emphasize that his debut at this elite level is just the beginning.
