Aat 72, John LaFlamme is more than an athlete but Powerlifter. Today, he stands as a symbol of passion in the world of powerlifting. Meanwhile, while many his age slow down, he breaks barriers and proves that strength has no age limit.

Next, last year he set a new IPF squat world record in the U83KG Masters 4 division. Specifically, at the 2023 NAPF North American Championships in the Cayman Islands, he lifted 193.5 kilograms — an astonishing 426.6 pounds. Certainly, this feat captured the attention of everyone present.

Then, earlier in the competition, he progressed smoothly with each attempt. Initially, the first two lifts came easily, setting the stage for a memorable final try. Moreover, it was that third attempt that would define the day.

Afterward, with only a belt and knee sleeves, he stepped under the bar and made history. In fact, that one lift secured a new world record, surpassing the mark he had set in 2021. Consequently, it cemented his legacy in the sport.

Finally, for those inspired by stories of strength and perseverance, LaFlamme’s performance stands as a testament. Indeed, it proves that relentless training, unshakable passion, and a strong will can defy expectations at any age. In short, he has shown the world that limits only exist if you accept them.

Delving into John LaFlamme’s storied journey in powerlifting, one finds a tale of persistence and passion. Marking his 53rd sanctioned appearance recently, LaFlamme’s initiation into the world of competitive lifting traces back to 1978. But like many narratives of greatness, his wasn’t linear. Following a hiatus in 1984, he returned nearly three decades later in 2013, not just to compete, but to dominate.

Since that impactful return, LaFlamme’s trajectory has only been upward. His performances haven’t merely been about participation; they have consistently redefined benchmarks and set world records. This unfaltering ascent has transformed him from a mere participant to an influential figure in the powerlifting community.

What Lies Ahead for LaFlamme?

While the man himself remains reticent about his future plans, his recent endeavors on the lifting platform speak volumes. If his current record-breaking spree is any indication, the powerlifting fraternity can expect more headline-worthy feats from LaFlamme in the major championships to come.
