The 2025 NPC Jay Cutler Desert Classic took place in Las Vegas on April 19. Fans filled the venue, eager to witness the rising stars of bodybuilding. Among them was a familiar figure from the world of powerlifting: Joe Sullivan.
After his successful powerlifting career, Sullivan made his bodybuilding debut. Like other powerlifters before him, such as Hunter Henderson and Marianna Gasparyan, Sullivan made the leap from the platform to the stage. This marked a significant shift in his athletic path.
In his debut, Sullivan competed in both the True Novice and Open Heavyweight categories. He won the True Novice division and took second in the Open Heavyweight. Clearly, his strong performance in both events suggests a bright future in bodybuilding.
I said I would nail every possible controllable variable. I had the best coaches in my corner.

Joe Sullivan Debuts in NPC at 2025 Jay Cutler Classic
Before his bodybuilding debut, Sullivan was known as one of the most successful powerlifters in the 100-kilogram category. He set the all-time world record in the squat for that weight class multiple times. His career-best lift, 386 kilograms, was achieved in 2023. However, Tyler Williamson surpassed that record with a 387.5-kilogram squat in March 2025.
Currently, Sullivan has not disclosed his future plans in either bodybuilding or powerlifting. To compete at the national level in bodybuilding, he would need to win an Open NPC show. This would be a necessary step for him to advance in the competitive bodybuilding scene.

It wouldn’t be unheard of for a former powerlifter to earn IFBB Pro League status. Terry and Gasparyan have both made the transition and found success. In addition, Henderson has proven himself as one of the most successful athletes in both sports, ranking 14th at the 2024 Ms. Olympia.
Clearly, Sullivan’s transition from powerlifting to bodybuilding holds great potential. If he continues on his current trajectory, he could soon join the ranks of athletes excelling in both arenas.
