The curtains have drawn on the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships after a fortnight of gripping contests and record-breaking performances. Amongst those who stamped their mark on the global stage, Jiang Huihua stood head and shoulders above the rest. Representing China’s rich legacy in the sport, Jiang achieved a remarkable feat, setting two World Records in the 49-kilogram weight class, showcasing her dominance in both the Clean & Jerk and Total categories.

Executing a phenomenal 120-kilogram (264.6-pound) Clean & Jerk, Jiang’s prowess was evident. Her technique was impeccable. With a powerful initial pull, she swiftly transitioned into a front squat. Standing upright, she then jerked the barbell overhead with finesse. Surprisingly, her astounding lift was achieved using minimal equipment, relying solely on knee and wrist protection, in addition to her lifting belt.

Previously, the U49KG Clean & Jerk World Record was held by India’s Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, lifting 119 kilograms (262.4 pounds) at the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships.

Jiang Complete Performance

Jiang’s all-around performance at the Championships was nothing short of perfection. Beyond her double World Record, she narrowly missed setting a third in the Snatch event, falling short by a mere 1-kilogram (2.2 pounds). Her numbers are truly commendable:

  • Snatch:
    • 89 kilograms (196.2 pounds)
    • 93 kilograms (205 pounds)
    • 95 kilograms (209.4 pounds)
  • Clean & Jerk:
    • 112 kilograms (246.9 pounds)
    • 117 kilograms (257.9 pounds)
    • 120 kilograms (264.6 pounds) — U49KG World Record
  • Total — 215 kilograms (474 pounds) — U49KG World Record

Interestingly, the prior U49KG Total World Record was held by Hou Zhihui, recording 213 kilograms (469.6 pounds) at the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships.

2023 World Weightlifting Championships U49KG Standings

  1. Jiang Huihua (CHN) — 215 kilograms (474 pounds)
  2. Hou Zhihui (CHN) — 211 kilograms (465.2 pounds)
  3. Jourdan Delacruz (USA) — 200 kilograms (440.9 pounds)

It’s notable that Jiang’s victory meant she had to surpass the prowess of the 2020 Olympic Champion, Hou Zhihui. Now, having outclassed Hou and shattering her Total World Record, Jiang emerges as China’s prime contender for the 2024 Olympic Games. While there’s more action and competition to come in the run-up to the Olympics, one thing is certain — Jiang Huihua is currently in a league of her own.

Overview

After a riveting two weeks at the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships, China’s Jiang Huihua emerged as the event’s shining star. Demonstrating unparalleled skill in the 49-kilogram weight class, she set two World Records in both the Clean & Jerk and Total categories. Achieving a 120-kilogram Clean & Jerk, Jiang eclipsed the previous record held by India’s Saikhom Mirabai Chanu. With a near-perfect performance, she also came close to setting a third record in the Snatch event. Her triumph over 2020 Olympic Champion, Hou Zhihui, further solidified her stature, positioning her as China’s prime prospect for the 2024 Olympic Games. Simply put, Jiang Huihua has established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the weightlifting world.
