Jay Cutler watched Martin Fitzwater’s rise with interest and compare him with Gustavo Badell. He noted consistency first. He said that steadiness rings a bell from an earlier era.
“The Martian brought some of the best conditioning of the entire show, which helped him secure fifth place.”
“Now, he’s top five in the world,” shares Cutler. “He’s on a mission. I’m pretty proud of him. It’s pretty cool to see the transition of people. Him to get fourth and fifth this year, yeah, to see that consistency, reminds me a lot of a Gustavo Badell. People really didn’t think much because he didn’t have any overwhelming body parts, but he landed third at the Olympia those two years, ’04 and ’05.”
Cutler did not frame the comparison as praise alone. He used Badell as a benchmark. He meant endurance over flash.
Jay Cutler Says Martin Fitzwater’s Consistency Reminds Him of the Late Gustavo Badell
Fitzwater climbed steadily through the ranks. He placed high at Olympia in his debut. He beat big names on his way up.
Cutler pointed to the pattern. He highlighted steady placings and incremental gains. He argued that those traits matter most over a career.
“I’m pretty proud of him,” Cutler said, repeating how the young man’s focus reminded him of Badell’s era.
This, Cutler said, makes Fitzwater’s a lasting threat reminds him as Gustavo Badell consistency. The line between contender and champion narrows with consistency.
Cutler also spoke about the sport’s wider economics. Moreover, he touched the prize-money gap between the big shows. He argued it affects competitors and strategy.
“I need to voice this because, you know… I won $100,000 at the Arnold every year, and I won $200,000 at my max at the Olympia, $155,000 the first year then they bumped it. I was second place a lot of times, six times but the money factor, when I was getting second, the top prize was $100,000. I got $60,000 and $75,000, right, so the thing is with me, I think there shouldn’t be such a swing.”
“I feel like they are reaching for this top prize of this big number, like the Arnold is $750,000, but I still think second pays $250,000 there; I might be wrong. I don’t have the knowledge of that, but I’m pretty sure. I just wish they would close the gap a little bit. Maybe not make the top prize so crazy because I feel like it’s everyone’s fighting to have the highest money.”
He said promoters can set purses how they like. But he urged fairness for the athletes below first place.
“The Olympia has obviously been that, you always heard this thing that you can’t pay more than the Olympia, but Arnold is paying $750,000, and Olympia is paying $600,000, so a little controversy there. The truth is to each their own,” said Jay Cutler.
The Badell Benchmark
Gustavo Badell matters in Cutler’s telling. Badell built results with consistency. He placed high, often when others expected less.
Cutler sees that same engine in Fitzwater. Furthermore, he pointed to repeatable performance over one dramatic showing. He suggested the comparison signals serious potential.
“He was a super fierce competitor.”
Cutler implied that Fitzwater’s could follow Gustavo Badell arc. If he keeps improving, Cutler said, Fitzwater could become a fixture at the top.

Overview
Jay Cutler’s remarks do more than praise a rising pro; they recast Martin Fitzwater as a long-game athlete rather than a one-show wonder. Cutler put weight behind the comparison to Gustavo Badell because he values steady scoring and repeatable progress. He also tied the conversation to the sport’s economics, arguing that prize-money structure alters strategy and can shape careers. Taken together, Cutler’s comments suggest Fitzwater has both the physique and the mental approach to remain relevant for years — not just to peak once. If Fitzwater keeps improving at the present pace, he will not only challenge for podiums but also influence how other contenders plan their seasons. For fans and promoters, the larger point is clear: consistency pays, both in placements and in legacy.
