Jason Smith, a South African athlete acclaimed for his exceptional prowess in CrossFit, has seen a rapid ascent in the sport, becoming one of the most illustrious athletes across Africa. But, a recent twist in his journey has brought unwelcome news. Through a post on Instagram, Smith revealed his provisional suspension from CrossFit, barring him from participating in the 2023 CrossFit Games due to a positive test for two proscribed substances.
A Stellar Athlete’s Journey
Smith’s extraordinary athletic skills first gained recognition in the African circuit, landing him a spot in the preeminent competition of CrossFit. He debuted at the CrossFit Games in 2017, earning an impressive top-ten finish, marking his entrance onto the international stage. Despite qualifying two more times, Smith was unable to secure a place in the following contests.
Maintaining a Steady Rank
Known for his discipline, Smith ranked as the top athlete in the Men’s (35-39) category in 2019 and led the leaderboard again the subsequent year. Demonstrating his formidable prowess, he reigned supreme at the 2021 Fittest in Cape Town Semifinal and followed up with a runner-up finish the next year.
Commanding Performance on Home Turf
Smith’s remarkable performance continued at the 2023 Africa Semifinal, where he dominated the competition, outscoring the runner-up, Conrad Winnertz, by an astounding 96 points.

The Stage Is Set: 2023 CrossFit Games
The 2023 CrossFit Games, slated for August 1-6 in Madison, Wisconsin, are set to see the world’s most elite CrossFit athletes compete. Justin Medeiros, the reigning two-time champion, is geared to clinch a third title.
Notable Absences in the Games
However, the line-up for the Games is missing several renowned names. Smith’s case is especially significant as he is the first athlete who qualified but will not compete due to a positive drug test.
A Season of Withdrawals
Mal O’Brien announced her withdrawal from the season due to personal challenges. Noah Ohlsen, a CrossFit veteran, plans to shift from the Individual division to Team, marking 2023 as his final season in the individual category.
Stepping Away from the Limelight
Six-time Fittest on Earth, Tia-Clair Toomey, stepped away due to her pregnancy. Additionally, Haley Adams, struggling with anxiety and an eating disorder, chose to focus on her mental and physical health, pulling out of the upcoming Games. Other athletes, including Ricky Garard and Kara Saunders, have also withdrawn from this year’s CrossFit Games.
Jason Smith Responds to Provisional Suspension from 2023 CrossFit Games
Athlete Tests Positive for Banned Substances, Announces Appeal
South African CrossFit athlete, Jason Smith, recently took to Instagram to disclose his provisional suspension from CrossFit and disqualification from the 2023 CrossFit Games following a positive test for two banned substances.
In an early morning announcement, CrossFit stated that Smith “provided a sample at the competition that contained exogenous 5a-androstane-3a,17b-diol (5aAdiol) and 5b-androstane-3a,17b-diol (5bAdiol).”
While Smith intends to challenge the decision, his provisional suspension remains in place, barring him from participating in the upcoming games.
“Completely shattered. Speechless and have so many questions,” wroteSmith. “I have been living in a nightmare the past week after receiving a [sic] email from CrossFit to say I’ve failed a drug test almost 2 months after Semifinals, and will not be competing at the CrossFit Games. For anyone who knows me, knows how against using Performance Enhancers I am to gain any advantage in sport or CrossFit. I have competed in CrossFit for 14 years, I own 2 CrossFit gyms, and have only encouraged health and fitness through CrossFit training. There is no reason for me to do this, or current explanation of how this has happened. I am getting legal and medical advice and will be appealing the decision by CrossFit.
“This is not an apology nor am I seeking sympathy. I do however appreciate those who support me during this time as this is something I’ve never imagined to have happened or to deal with, but I will get to the bottom of this!”
