Jamal Browner is a well-known name in the world of powerlifting, thanks to his incredible deadlifting abilities. However, he has gained fame mainly for his ability to pull off staggering amounts of weight from a sumo stance. Lately, though, it’s his progress with more traditional, conventional deadlifting that’s been making headlines.

On April 18, 2023, Browner shared a video on Instagram that showcased him lifting a raw 435-kilogram (959-pound) deadlift from a conventional stance. According to his caption, this lift is a personal record (PR) for this variation of the deadlift. What’s even more impressive is that he achieved this feat just a little over a month after setting his previous PR for the conventional deadlift. In the video, Browner can be seen wearing lifting straps and a lifting belt, and he also used a traditional grip for the lift.

Browner’s Dedication to Training and Improvement

Browner’s progress with traditional deadlifting is a testament to his commitment to improving and pushing himself to new heights. Although he has made a name for himself as a sumo deadlifter, he hasn’t shied away from incorporating more conventional deadlifts into his training regimen.

The deadlift is a powerlifting staple that involves lifting a loaded barbell from the ground to hip level, then lowering it back down. While the sumo deadlift is a more wide-stance variation, the conventional deadlift involves a narrower stance and requires more use of the back muscles. Browner’s progress with this variation of the lift is impressive, especially given how much weight he is able to lift. His dedication to training and improving his technique is a testament to his commitment to the sport and his desire to reach new heights.

Browner’s Conventional Deadlift Catching Up to Sumo Deadlift

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been following Jamal Browner’s training exploits that his conventional deadlift is catching up to his sumo deadlift. While deadlifting from a sumo stance may be considered “easier” due to the wider stance that lowers the range of motion needed to lift a stacked barbell off the ground, it might still take some time and consistency for Browner’s conventional pulling to match his sumo pulling.

Browner’s Steady Progress in Raw Conventional Deadlift Preparation

Despite the potential difficulties in achieving success in conventional deadlifting, Browner has been sharing clips of his steady progress in raw conventional deadlift preparation. He recently posted a video of himself completing a 365-kilogram (804-pound) raw conventional pulling session for five reps and disclosed a clip where he deadlifted 422.5 kilograms (931.4 pounds) with ease.

Browner’s Goals for Conventional Deadlift Not Yet Clarified

While Browner has not clarified his precise goals for conventional deadlift pulling, it’s presumed that he wants to break the raw 1,000-pound barrier in a sanctioned competition at the very least. He has already achieved this officially from a sumo stance when he scored the raw all-time deadlift World Record of 455 kilograms (1,003 pounds) in the 110-kilogram division at the 2022 United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) Raw Pro.

Browner’s Legacy in Powerlifting

From a macro scale, Browner has already cemented himself as one of the greatest pullers of all time, and he has nothing left to prove as a deadlifter. However, if he can make deadlifting at least 1,000 pounds from both sumo and conventional stances, his already significant legacy may only continue to grow in scope.

Overview

Powerlifter Jamal Browner sets a personal record in conventional deadlifting with a 959-pound lift, just over a month after setting his previous record. His dedication to improving his technique and incorporating conventional deadlifts into his training regimen is impressive. Browner’s ultimate goals for his conventional deadlifting are unclear, but his achievements in powerlifting have already solidified his legacy as one of the greatest pullers of all time.
