When you first begin your bodybuilding journey, it’s easy to make impressive gains in a short period of time, but once you’ve been training for a long while, your progress begins to slow down, and you begin to hit plateaus more and more frequently. It can be deflating to see that you pack on so much muscle in the beginning of your journey only to find that you struggle to put even an ounce of muscle on once you’re more experienced. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently provided some useful advice on how to overcome a plateau in a newsletter installment of “The Pump Daily.” He suggested wave training as a method to break through a plateau and continue making progress.
Schwarzenegger emphasized that transforming your body is a simple equation but not an easy task. To see the best results, you need to train with intensity relative to your own strength and progressively challenge your muscles with more weight, sets, reps, or challenging exercises – or all of the above – and do it consistently. When you hit a wall with your workouts, wave training can help you break out of your rut and continue making gains.
Schwarzenegger explained that wave training is a technique that can help your body build strength and muscle by alternating sets of low-rep training with higher reps. The low-rep set activates more of your motor units, which cause your muscle fibers to fire, and when you shift to the higher-rep set, it can help you lift more than usual.
To provide clarity, Arnold gave some examples of wave training, indicating that you could start with a set of five reps at 80% of your one-rep max, then increase the weight for a set of four reps at 85% of your one-rep max, then again for a set of three reps at 90% of your one-rep max, and so on until you reach a single-rep max. Alternatively, you could reverse the order by starting with a single-rep max and working backward.
Schwarzenegger’s wave training technique is a way to keep your body guessing and make gains even when you hit a plateau. By mixing up your rep ranges and weights, you can challenge your muscles in new ways and prevent them from becoming accustomed to the same old routine.

Examples of Wave Training for Breaking Through Plateaus:

One example of wave training suggested by Schwarzenegger is doing 3-5 reps at 225 pounds followed by 6-10 reps at 185 pounds with a 2-3 minute rest between sets. Another example he gave was doing 5 reps (per leg) of Bulgarian split squats followed by 10 reps (per leg) of regular split squats.
