Larry Wheels, a powerlifting sensation and fitness influencer, has overcome a number of health challenges throughout his stellar career. Last week, he was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition that he candidly discussed in a recent YouTube video, providing his fans with an update on his recovery journey.

The Making of a Legend: Larry Wheels’ Rise in the Fitness World

Wheels has carved out a distinct place for himself within the fitness community, renowned for his extraordinary strength. He achieved renown after setting the World Record for squat, bench, and deadlift at 2,275 pounds without wraps in the 275-lb weight category, a record recently surpassed by Zac Meyers. A multi-talented athlete, Wheels has competed in a variety of sports, from strongman and bodybuilding to arm wrestling, showcasing an aesthetic physique rarely seen among powerlifters. His prowess was demonstrated when he won his amateur bodybuilding debut at the 2018 NPC Gold Coast Muscle Classic.

A New Chapter: Wheels’ Transition from PEDs to TRT

Following a decade of regular use, Wheels decided to abstain from PEDs (performance-enhancing drugs) after sustaining a back injury during contest preparations. In order to manage the transition, Wheels opted for TRT (testosterone replacement therapy). He then set his sights on the Classic Physique division, aligning himself with Open veteran William Bonac and up-and-coming sensation Andrew Jacked to hone his skills after the 2023 Arnold Classic.

Taking On a New Challenge: Wheels’ Move to Classic Physique

Confident in his muscular build, Wheels believes he can make his mark in the Classic Physique category while on TRT alone. He wowed fans with a preview of his shredded physique ahead of his anticipated move. Although he doesn’t expect to win the prestigious Sandow trophy, he feels he could be a strong contender against reigning four-time champion Chris Bumstead.

Wheels displayed his incredible bicep peak and demonstrated his powerlifting prowess, smashing a set of 405-lb bench presses for 22 reps, followed by a 150-lb incline dumbbell bench press for 25 reps. He recently undertook a grueling chest training session with powerlifting legend CT Fletcher, impressively repping a 500-pound paused bench press.

Classic Physique Versus Open Class: Wheels’ Perspective

According to Wheels, Classic Physique allows for more artistic expression, while the Open class leans heavily towards mass building. His decision to choose Classic was influenced by his desire to avoid the health risks associated with competing in the Open class.

Facing Health Challenges Head On: Wheels’ Rhabdomyolysis Diagnosis

Wheels disclosed his recent diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis, a revelation that came after a trip to the emergency room last week. This serious condition signals yet another health challenge that the powerlifting sensation is determined to overcome.

A Health Scare: Larry Wheels’ Encounter with Rhabdomyolysis

Larry Wheels, the powerlifting dynamo, recently revealed a deeply personal and frightening health experience in a YouTube video. The fitness titan shared how he discovered his rhabdomyolysis diagnosis, a serious condition that surfaced after a period of feeling light-headed. Initially attributing these symptoms to a potential heart attack or stroke due to his past extensive use of performance-enhancing drugs, Wheels experienced a week of uncertainty and fear before the issue was correctly identified as rhabdo.

“Several days ago, I was diagnosed with rhabdo, short for rhabdomyolysis. And how it started was a week ago I was experiencing light headedness that I couldn’t explain,” said Wheels. “So I’m not diabetic I don’t have a history of having low blood sugar and I was not on any stimulants. I’m not taking insulin. I just couldn’t figure out why I was feeling light headed, having hot flashes, being dizzy. There was no pain anywhere in my body so it was unexplained.”

“I’m thinking between [drinking two or three times the last week] and the car accident I had about a week prior is what may have triggered the rhabdo. Back to how I was feeling, light headedness and that brought on anxiety. Why am I feeling this way? I start panicking. I have the fear of the unknown. I don’t know what’s going on with my body. Short breath, chest pain, that made me a Google doctor and thinking maybe I’m having a heart attack or a stroke because I used PEDs for 10 years straight. All the things going through my head. When I’d take fast sugar I noticed the light headedness would go away. So I’m thinking maybe my insulin sensitivity has changed due to the alcohol consumption. But it would only subside for about an hour or two before it would come back.”

A Life-Saving Decision: Wheels’ Trip to the Emergency Room

After a rigorous training session with fellow bodybuilder Breon Ansley, Wheels sensed a distressing anomaly in his body. Trusting his intuition that something was amiss, he made the critical decision to visit the Emergency Room. It was here that he learned his creatine kinase levels had spiked alarmingly, a clear indication that he was grappling with more than just a strenuous workout.

“After the workout with Breon, that’s when I felt it come on so strong. I started panicking more than I had the last few days… It came back relentlessly. I was really feeling even more than the gym so much to the point where I felt like I couldn’t stand up straight. I was thinking I just consumed about a half gallon of apple juice. My blood sugar shouldn’t be an issue right now. That made me panic. That’s when I was like, you know what, it’s been damn near a week, I’m feeling this way every day all day long waking up this way, I gotta listen to my body, something is wrong, let’s figure it out. I went to the ER and they ended up diagnosing me with rhabdo. They said my creatine kinase levels, my CK levels, were elevated. Normal is between 50 and 100, I was at 2,500. They said I was at risk for kidney damage if not failure. They basically told me you gotta stay in the hospital, take this IV with some fluids, get rehydrated. I did that overnight and they discharged me once my levels dropped enough.”

“Ever since then I’ve just been over hydrating with nuun tabs and lots of water.”

Bouncing Back: Larry Wheels on the Road to Recovery Post-Rhabdo Diagnosis

Larry Wheels delivered a heartening update on his recovery following his diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis. Showing remarkable resilience, Wheels reported that he’s nearly back to peak form. In a testament to his ongoing recovery and unyielding spirit, he recently demonstrated his strength by crushing a 405-pound incline bench press for an impressive 13 reps.

“Taking the nuun tabs, drinking plenty of water, eating every three hours, I’ve been doing like this and I’ve been feeling a rapid improvement day by day so much so to the point where yesterday I benched 405 on the incline for 13 reps and that was fantastic. My all-time best with that weight is 14 I believe.”

“As of today, I woke up feeling good, was out in the heat, active, filming, no problem. This is the first day I feel about 90 percent recovered. I don’t feel lightheadedness, anxiety, shortness of breath. I feel like I’m just about back to normal.”
