Hunter Labrada appears to be engaging in frank reflection following his underwhelming seventh-place finish at the 2022 Mr. Olympia. In mid-January 2023, the accomplished bodybuilder shared that he was so disappointed by his latest Olympia results that he would be taking a temporary break from social media to avoid any negative feedback on his performance. Despite this setback, he made a commitment to bounce back and revealed some of his plans to achieve this goal.
On February 8, 2023, Labrada posted a video on his YouTube channel in which he discussed some of his upcoming plans. He disclosed that he would no longer be solely focused on building mass during his training. Instead, he emphasized his desire to “minimize his waistline” as he concentrates on refining other aspects of his physique throughout the 2023 competitive season.
When a bodybuilder shifts their focus away from simply increasing their overall size, they can discover a wealth of new possibilities.
According to Labrada, “Everything needs to be thicker, but my main area of focus is my back. Additionally, this is going to be my first off-season where everything else is already big enough. I don’t need to chase size to the point where I’m constantly feeling sick from overeating. During this off-season, we are going to emphasize eating whole foods and using supplements to optimize my digestion and minimize my waistline.”
While Labrada didn’t provide many specifics regarding his plans to improve his physique, he did mention a few key areas of focus. He plans to refine his abs, specifically by incorporating vacuum poses, which involve engaging the deepest muscles of the abs. This approach was inspired by his recent showing at the Olympia.
“I’m going to keep training my abs as I have been,” Labrada stated. “I started doing vacuum poses after the Olympia, and I’ve already noticed a significant improvement. I’ve been doing them every morning for a month now, and it’s made a big difference. So, I’m going to keep doing what’s within my control and checking all the boxes daily. Ultimately, that’s all we can do.”
