On June 4, 2025, President Donald Trump signed a new travel proclamation Ban and uncertainty arise for 2025 Olympia. It bans foreign nationals from 12 countries from entering the United States. The order officially took effect on June 9.
Previously, Trump implemented a similar travel ban in 2017. That version remained in place until 2021, when President Joe Biden rescinded it. Now, with Trump back in office, the restrictions have returned — and with potential consequences for sports.
Specifically, the bodybuilding world is on alert. Many competitors preparing for the 2025 Olympia may no longer be eligible to enter the U.S. For some of them, this travel ban could erase a year’s worth of work overnight.
🌍 Countries Under Full Travel Ban
Trump’s new order applies to 12 countries across Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and the Caribbean. Nationals from these countries are banned from entering the U.S. without exception.
U.S. officials say these countries failed to meet modern identity-verification standards. They argue that this move protects national security and encourages foreign governments to comply with international protocols. Still, the move has faced backlash from immigration advocates and sports organizations alike.
For Olympia competitors from these regions, the consequences are severe. Many have already started contest prep. If the policy stands, they may lose the opportunity to step on stage.
🌐 Full Travel Ban

|---|---|---|
| 🇦🇫 | Afghanistan | South Asia |
| 🇲🇲 | Myanmar (Burma) | Southeast Asia |
| 🇹🇩 | Chad | Central Africa |
| 🇨🇬 | Republic of Congo | Central Africa |

| 🇱🇾 | Libya | North Africa |
| 🇸🇴 | Somalia | East Africa |
| 🇸🇩 | Sudan | Northeast Africa |
| 🇾🇪 | Yemen | Middle East |
⚠️ Countries Under Partial Restrictions
In addition to the full ban, six other countries face partial restrictions. The rules are less sweeping, but still complicate travel for athletes, teams, and support staff. In these cases, U.S. embassies may increase visa scrutiny or deny entry altogether.
Officials have stated that these restrictions are based on diplomatic issues or incomplete cooperation with U.S. travel requirements. They maintain that the limits are temporary and targeted. Yet, sports professionals from these nations say the uncertainty alone has created serious roadblocks.
As a result, Olympia organizers may face sudden changes in the competitor list. Athletes from these countries will need to apply early and prepare for possible rejections. Even minor delays could result in missed shows.

🇺🇸 Trump Travel Ban Raises Concerns Ahead of 2025 Olympia
On June 4, President Donald Trump signed a travel ban targeting 12 countries. It officially went into effect on June 9. The bodybuilding community responded with uncertainty.
Now, with the 2025 Olympia approaching, athletes from affected countries may be unable to compete. Some fans are concerned this could disrupt the integrity of the competition. Others worry it may sideline high-level talent.
So far, Olympia organizers have remained silent. Athletes are seeking answers. Officials may need to clarify how this ban applies to elite bodybuilding.
🛂 Which Athletes Are Exempt From President Trump’s Travel Ban?
Notably, the proclamation includes a section outlining exemptions. Athletes traveling for global events may still be allowed to enter. However, it names only two competitions explicitly: the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.
In particular, Exemption IV refers to athletes, coaches, essential support roles, and immediate relatives. Entry is subject to approval by the Secretary of State. No other events are mentioned by name.
“Any athlete or member of an athletic team, including coaches, persons performing a necessary support role, and immediate relatives, traveling for the World Cup, Olympics, or other major sporting event as determined by the Secretary of State.”
As a result, events like the 2025 Olympia remain in limbo. Unless bodybuilding is designated a “major sporting event,” competitors from banned countries may be blocked from entering.

💪 What Does This Mean for Bodybuilding?
In recent years, visa delays have affected several high-level competitors. Most notably, 2022 Mr. Olympia Hadi Choopan faced denials during earlier contests. Despite his qualifications, he missed the 2018 Olympia due to visa rejection.
In 2019, his visa was denied again. Only after a successful interview in the UAE did he gain entry. His fans followed the ordeal closely as he shared updates during the process.
“I am still waiting on my final paperwork. I hope to see you in the U.S., but I’m not certain yet.”
This year, Choopan has an automatic qualification. Still, Iran is once again on the banned list. Without formal recognition of Olympia, his participation is uncertain.

Meanwhile, competitors and promoters are calling for clarification. If Olympia is not added to the exemption list, many elite athletes will miss the show. The industry is watching closely.
