Ryan Terry, a Men’s Physique bodybuilder, shared his advice on what he wished he had done differently when he was younger in a video on his YouTube channel. The video was posted on February 26, 2023. Terry has been training in the gym for two decades and wishes he had avoided some of the mistakes he made during his early years of training. He hopes that others can learn from his experiences and avoid the same mistakes that he made.

According to Terry, experience and injuries are part of learning, but heeding advice from those who have gone through trials and tribulations can streamline training and achieving goals. By learning from others, aspiring athletes can avoid making the same mistakes that could lead to injuries and setbacks. Terry believes that he could have better used his time in the gym had he not made these mistakes.

The purpose of his video is to pass on his knowledge and experience to help others.

Here are the eight mistakes that Ryan Terry wished he had avoided during his two decades of training:

The following are the eight mistakes that Ryan Terry wishes he had avoided during his younger years:

1.Avoiding Ego Lifting in the Gym

Ego lifting is a common mistake that many people make when they start training. It involves lifting weights that are too heavy or taking unnecessary risks in the gym. It can lead to serious injuries and setbacks, which can be difficult to recover from.

To avoid ego lifting, it’s important to leave your ego at the door and train for yourself. Ryan Terry learned this lesson the hard way. He suffered several injuries throughout his career because he tried to lift the same weights as other athletes who were stronger or bigger than him. By focusing on his own goals and training within his capabilities, he could have avoided those injuries.

2.Avoid Distractions at the Gym: Phones, Social Media, and More

According to Terry, when training in the gym, it is important to fully focus on the effort. He believes that athletes who take photos of themselves in the gym or record themselves while training for social media are doing themselves a disservice. While social media became popular during Terry’s career, he suggests that athletes prioritize training over social media.

Terry clarifies that he is not suggesting that athletes eliminate cameras and social media from their routine if it is part of their brand or a way to build their following. However, he recommends outsourcing the responsibility if possible so that the athlete can focus primarily on training. For anyone trying to be an elite bodybuilder like Terry, it is crucial to grind through each workout without any distractions that could hinder the training.

3.Avoid Prioritizing Cardio Over Resistance Training

As a Men’s Physique competitor, Ryan Terry knows the importance of having a well-carved physique, including abs, a tight midsection, and steep-slanted V-tapers. However, when he was younger, he made a mistake by focusing too much on cardio to stay lean, when he should have prioritized resistance training.

According to Terry, resistance training should be the primary focus. While cardio is still a useful tool for maintaining a caloric deficit when aiming to cut weight, it only helps in expending energy. On the other hand, resistance training is essential for building the foundation of a muscular physique, which can be improved over time.

4.Make Proper Nutrition a Priority

Proper nutrition is essential to building an aesthetic physique. It not only provides the necessary energy levels and sustenance for the body to build muscle but also the fuel needed to execute the training necessary for one’s goals. While straightforward, it is a difficult mistake to avoid.

Paragraph 2: Attempting to out-train a bad diet is likely a fool’s errand. In Terry’s youth, he would starve himself during the day only to have a “pig-out meal” at the end of the day. The spikes in blood sugar and unregulated fasting did not do him any favors. The right nutrition combined with the right training will get the best out of you.

5.Avoid Neglecting Your Training Plan

Having a plan and goal before entering the gym is essential for a productive workout, according to Terry. Without a plan, the workout may not be as effective as it could be. Terry recommends having a weekly training split that caters to his goals as a competitive bodybuilder. He ensures that his training split allows him to train with optimal frequency and intensity while allowing for proper recovery.

Having a plan of attack is also important for routine gym-goers. Terry suggests creating a plan that includes exercises that they enjoy and are capable of, with a goal to strive for. This will more likely keep them coming back to the gym consistently, which over time will be more effective than sporadically training whenever they spontaneously feel like going to the gym.

6.Avoid Neglecting Mind-Muscle Connection in Your Workouts

In bodybuilding, mind-muscle connection is crucial for maximum stimulus of a target muscle group. Unlike other strength sports, where the main goal is often to simply move a weight by the most efficient means possible, bodybuilding is all about stimulating the muscle for growth and ultimately enhancing its aesthetics.

If one cannot establish a mind-muscle connection due to lifting weights that are too heavy, and form is compromised, then it is best to lower the weight until the mind-muscle connection can be established again. When performing a repetition, one should visualize their body’s anatomy and how the muscle fibers connect via their insertion points. The goal should be to shorten the target muscle to its peak contraction and then move it through its full range of motion on the eccentric.

7.Importance of Doing Your Research

For bodybuilders, it’s crucial to have a clear idea of what kind of physique they want to build. When aiming to compete in bodybuilding competitions, understanding the specific criteria for the division they want to enter and how the judges evaluate the competitors is essential. This includes knowing how much emphasis is placed on conditioning, what body structure is most rewarded, and how posing can influence overall appearance. This knowledge can guide their training and help them focus on the areas that will best showcase their physique on stage.

Competing against oneself is a great motivation to improve, but for those who aim to win bodybuilding contests, it is essential to research what will be rewarded by the judges. This information can guide athletes in planning how to train in the gym and help them build the right physique to succeed in their chosen division. Terry emphasizes the importance of doing the homework and understanding what structure, conditioning, and posing are rewarded in a particular competition. By doing so, athletes can optimize their training and bring their best package to the stage.

8.Avoid Comparing Yourself to Others Out of Context

Terry advises individuals to navigate the fitness industry in a manner that is suitable for them. He suggests that compromising on one’s beliefs or values for the sake of what others want or to gain recognition is unsustainable in the long run.

Instead, Terry encourages individuals to be authentic and build a following that aligns with their values. By consistently promoting their beliefs, individuals can establish a message that is more fulfilling than short-lived periods of attention obtained through abandoning one’s principles. Therefore, it is essential to stand by what one believes in and strive to bring value to others.
