For avid powerlifting fans, nothing is more satisfying than a true rivalry between two of the sport’s greatest athletes. In the case of Danny Grigsby and Jamal Browner, that dream has become a reality. At the recent 2023 WRPF METROFLEX BATTLE FOR THE YARD 8 held in California on March 25th, Danny Grigsby outperformed Jamal Browner to set a brand new All-Time World Record in the deadlift event.
Danny Grigsby made the decision to experiment with weight cutting, dropping down from his usual 125-kilogram weight class to compete in the 110-kilogram weight class. This decision turned out to be a smart one, as he lifted an incredible 467.5-kilogram (1,030.7-pound) deadlift. With Jamal Browner holding the previous All-Time World Record of 455 kilograms (1,003.1 pounds), Danny has now broken the record.
While Danny Grigsby may feel that he “came short” of his own expectations, he still managed to deliver a remarkable performance. His deadlift was particularly impressive, as he has perfected the sumo technique and the hook grip. Danny’s achievement is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and commitment to the sport of powerlifting.

Analyzing Danny Grigsby’s Impressive Performance at the 2023 WRPF METROFLEX BATTLE FOR THE YARD 8
- Squat: 352.5 kilograms (777 pounds) — Competition PR
- Bench Press: 197 kilograms (434 pounds)
- Deadlift: 467.5 kilograms (1,030.7 pounds) — U110KG All-Time World Record
- Total: 1,017 kilograms (2,242.1 pounds)
Danny Grigsby’s strength and athleticism were on full display at the 2023 WRPF METROFLEX BATTLE FOR THE YARD 8, where he not only broke the All-Time World Record in the deadlift but also put up an impressive performance in the squat event. Despite dropping down a weight class, Grigsby’s heaviest squat attempt came out to 352.5 kilograms (777 pounds), marking a new Competition PR.
While Grigsby’s squat performance was remarkable, he did not manage to set a new Competition PR in other events. This is not surprising given that he has previously competed in both the 125-kilogram and 140-kilogram weight classes, making it easier for him to lift heavier weights. Nonetheless, Grigsby’s strength and technique were still impressive throughout the competition.
It is worth noting that Grigsby has achieved great success in powerlifting prior to the 2023 WRPF METROFLEX BATTLE FOR THE YARD 8. In particular, his 487.5-kilogram (1,074.7-pound) deadlift at the 2022 WRPF American Pro currently stands as the heaviest raw deadlift in powerlifting history, across all weight classes. Despite his decision to drop down a weight class for this competition, Grigsby has a plan to pack on some pounds and return to his original weight category for the next competition. “I experimented with cutting weight this time and dropping to the 242 (pound) weight class because I’ll be 275 (pounds) again at the American Pro,” he said.
