On December 9, 2024, Anna Gray came home from a CrossFit Lynchburg class in Lynchburg, VA, to a frightening scene. Furthermore, she found her 29-year-old husband, TJ Vaught, suffering from a facial droop and unable to move the right side of his body. Later, doctors confirmed that Crossfit Coach had suffered two strokes.
“Thankfully, he was alive when I found him, and I was able to get him in the car and to the ER,” Gray said.
TJ Vaught, a CrossFit coach at CrossFit Lynchburg, suffered two strokes and underwent emergency brain surgery to remove three blood clots. Consequently, his family was left in shock, facing an unexpected and life-threatening situation. As a result, the impact of this event has caused emotional and financial strain on his loved ones.
However, despite the severity of the situation, the surgery was successful. Therefore, doctors remain hopeful for his full recovery, although they note he will need “pretty intense speech therapy.” However, the recovery timeline is uncertain, and Gray explained the challenges they will continue to face as they navigate the road ahead.

CrossFit Coach TJ Vaught, 29, Recovering From Two Strokes as Medical Bills Mount
Gray credits CrossFit for the speed of Vaught’s physical recovery. She believes his fitness background has played a crucial role in his progress. Additionally, his strength and conditioning have given him an advantage as he regains mobility and strength.
“He doesn’t even need physical therapy. I feel like he could go workout and be OK, but because he did have surgery, it’s more about making sure all the incision points are healed enough [before he goes back to the gym],” she said. “He wouldn’t be where he is without being so fit beforehand.”
The most challenging part, however, is his communication abilities. Despite progress in other areas, Vaught struggles with speech and language. This issue requires extensive therapy to help him regain full function.
“He knows what he’s trying to say, but words aren’t coming out correctly. He can read, but not out loud, so communication is difficult,” Gray said.
Urgent Attention
The couple faces a significant financial hurdle. Gray works for a small nonprofit, and Vaught was a student about to graduate and become a teacher. Consequently, they lack adequate medical insurance to cover the mounting costs.
Meanwhile, the 5 a.m. class at CrossFit Lynchburg took action. They set up a GoFundMe page, which had raised over $21,000 by the time of publishing.
But bills are rising, and Gray said the couple is in “a pretty tough spot.”
Now, more than ever, Gray appreciates CrossFit’s role in their lives. It’s the reason she believes Vaught is recovering so well. Additionally, it provides her with an essential escape from the mounting stress.
“I have been able to have some people come over because he can’t be alone, so I can go to the gym and work off some steam and stress,” Gray said. “And the community has been really supportive through all this.”
As for Vaught, he’s already focused on returning to the gym as soon as he can.
“He wants to be there. Right now, he’s having brain fog, and he’s tired. He has to work extra hard to communicate and interact with people. But he will be back,” she said.
