Colton Engelbrecht has shocked the strength world. At the Nikolay Kagansky Memorial Tournament in Moscow, Russia, Engelbrecht deadlifts 500 kilograms using a sumo stance. This lift puts him among the rare few who have ever reached that number — with any stance.
Next, Engelbrecht weighed in at 122 kilograms. Before his record-attempting pull, he completed a 420-kilogram squat and a 260-kilogram bench press. Then, he secured a 470-kilogram deadlift within competition rules before attempting the 500.
Then, on his first try at 500 kilograms, he came up short. He dropped the bar just before lockout, which ruled the lift invalid. However, the crowd rallied behind him. On his second attempt — now using lifting straps — he completed the monumental pull. Engelbrecht did not wear a deadlift suit.

However, because powerlifting rules prohibit straps, the lift was unofficial. Still, the moment mattered. Engelbrecht now stands beside Eddie Hall, Hafthor Björnsson, Jamal Browner, and Krzysztof Wierzbicki — all of whom have pulled 500 kilograms or more on camera.
Eddie Hall was the first. He lifted 500 kilograms in 2016 at a strongman competition, using a suit and straps. It remains the only sanctioned 500-kilogram deadlift to date.
Later, Hafthor Björnsson raised the bar with a 501-kilogram lift in 2020. He performed it at his own gym in Iceland as part of the CoreSports Feats of Strength series.
Then, Jamal Browner added to the club with a 500-kilogram sumo deadlift in training using straps. Finally, Wierzbicki pulled 502.5 kilograms sumo, also with straps, in a gym session.
Now, Engelbrecht joins that elite circle. Though unofficial, his lift proves he has the strength to match the sport’s best.
This isn’t his first time making waves. At the 2025 WPC Clash of Titans, he totaled 1,200 kilograms raw. That gave him the title of the world’s strongest pound-for-pound powerlifter.
Previously, he attempted the 500-kilogram deadlift at that same meet. He didn’t make it then. But this new effort shows clear progress.
Clearly, Engelbrecht’s upward trajectory continues. If he nails the lift in official conditions next, his name will take its rightful place in powerlifting history.

Overview
Colton Engelbrecht stunned the powerlifting world by sumo deadlifts 500 kilograms at a meet in Moscow. Although he missed his first attempt, he succeeded on his second try using lifting straps. However, because straps are not allowed in official powerlifting, the lift doesn’t count as a record. Still, this feat places him among the strongest lifters ever. Moreover, Engelbrecht’s previous accomplishments, including a 1,200-kilogram raw total, show his steady rise. Finally, Colosseum Strength has reached out to him for comments on his future goals and potential official attempts.
