Powerlifting records are typically broken in small increments. Athletes push their limits bit by bit, gradually raising the bar. But some feats transcend that steady progress. Colton Engelbrecht of South Africa made history by becoming the first person ever to achieve a 1,200-kilogram raw total, a milestone that rewrites the Powerlifting record books.
By the age of 24, Engelbrecht had already made his mark. He held the all-time raw total world records in both the 110- and 125-kilogram weight classes. For example, in 2024, he lifted 1,120 kilograms at the WPC-SA Beastmode Power Wars. This total was just 27.5 kilograms shy of Dan Bell’s 2021 world record.
However, in March 2025, Engelbrecht surpassed all expectations. At the WPC Clash of the Titans in Durban, he became the first person in history to hit a 1,200-kilogram raw total. In doing so, he claimed an unparalleled achievement. Engelbrecht became the strongest pound-for-pound powerlifter on the planet.
Ultimately, this milestone redefined what is possible in the sport. Not only did Engelbrecht set a new record, but he also solidified his position at the top of the powerlifting world. In the end, his achievement will be remembered as a historic moment in strength sports.

2025 WPC Clash of Titans Results — Colton Engelbrecht Sets Powerlifting Record
- Squat: 470 kilograms (1,036.2 pounds)
- Bench Press: 260 kilograms (573.2 pounds)
- Deadlift: 470 kilograms (1,036.2 pounds)
- Total: 1,200 kilograms (2,645.6 pounds)
Engelbrecht’s attempt at a 500-kilogram deadlift on his final attempt was impressive. He pulled the barbell to his knees but couldn’t lock it out. However, his effort suggested that he had more left in the tank. Had he not made a massive 30-kilogram jump between his eighth and ninth attempts, it’s likely he could have surpassed the 1,200-kilogram total mark.
Weighing in at 120 kilograms, Engelbrecht’s record total was 10 times his body weight. This is significant. He wasn’t a superheavyweight achieving these remarkable numbers. Engelbrecht was two weight classes below the superheavyweight division and still managed to smash previous records with room to spare.
In an Instagram post about his achievement, Engelbrecht shared his thoughts.
“It’s been done,” he wrote. “I told everyone I wouldn’t fail again, and I didn’t — hit the biggest total in powerlifting history, 10 times body weight total, and highest dots ever. I’m not done; I will go further, so sit back and enjoy the show.”
