Discussing Murphy’s dedication, co-star Emily Blunt shared insights in a recent interview. She remarked, “He had such a monumental undertaking. And he could only eat, like, an almond every day. He was so emaciated.”

In an interview with the New York Times, Murphy, 47, shed light on his approach to embodying his character.

“I love acting with my body, and Oppenheimer had a very distinct physicality and silhouette, which I wanted to get right,” he said, adding, “He was very slim, almost emaciated, existed on martinis and cigarettes.” Said by Murphy.

A Restrictive Diet? 

While the Inception star did not adopt J. Robert Oppenheimer’s diet of martinis and cigarettes, the details of his own diet remain undisclosed. However, it has been implied that his diet was incredibly restrictive, contributing to his dramatic weight loss.

Speaking about his weight loss journey, Murphy warned of the dangers of pushing one’s body too far. “You become competitive with yourself a little bit, which is not healthy. I don’t advise it,” he confided to The Guardian.

Despite the significant weight loss, Murphy emphasized that he did not want the narrative of his preparation to overshadow his performance. “I don’t want it to be; Cillian lost X weight for the part,” he expressed.

“It’s like you’re on this fucking train that’s just bombing. It’s bang, bang, bang, bang. You sleep for a few hours, get up, bang it again,” he described. Despite the extreme calorie restriction, Murphy was fueled by a “crazy energy” that closely resembled his character’s traits, notably that “he never ate.”
