The bodybuilding world erupted with concern when rumors spread that Derek Lunsford almost died backstage at the 2025 Mr. Olympia. His coach, Chris Aceto, has now stepped forward to deny these claims, clarifying that Lunsford experienced a panic attack — not a life-threatening medical event at 2025 Olympia.
Aceto explained that the “almost died” story was completely false and exaggerated. He emphasized that Lunsford’s vital signs were all stable, with normal blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and alertness. While the moment was tense, it was not a physical collapse or emergency.
Although Lunsford has been open about his struggles with anxiety, Aceto shared that this was one of the first times the champion recognized he was having a full panic attack. Despite the scare, Lunsford gathered himself, went onstage, and ultimately reclaimed the Olympia title — turning a moment of weakness into a display of composure and willpower.

Chris Aceto Denies Rumor That Derek Lunsford Almost Died Backstage at the 2025 Mr. Olympia — “It Was a Panic Attack, Not a Crisis
In the days following the event, several outlets claimed Lunsford collapsed backstage and nearly lost consciousness. Aceto quickly shut down those rumors, saying none of it was true.
“No, that’s completely, utterly no reality to those claims,” Aceto said. “Derek did not have a cramp anywhere … It’s more than ludicrous; it’s not the truth.”
He then explained exactly what took place.
“He had backstage a panic attack … I thought he must be having a lot of anxiety if he asked for me to come backstage. … I wasn’t sure what a panic attack even really was, so I couldn’t recognize it or what was happening until way after the fact.”

Aceto clarified that this was not a medical collapse, but rather a severe bout of anxiety triggered by the intensity of the moment and pressure of defending the Olympia title.
This incident highlighted the mental and emotional toll that comes with performing at the top level of bodybuilding. Even the best in the world are not immune to anxiety, pressure, or fear.
Aceto said that Lunsford’s ability to center himself and still perform showed his true strength.
“He’s had issues with anxiety, and it just passed. Anxiety can pass by talking to someone you trust … and I can do all those with Derek.”
As the reigning Mr. Olympia, Lunsford’s transparency about his mental health could help normalize conversations about stress and panic among competitors. He continues to train with focus and intensity, proving that mental fortitude is just as critical as muscle mass on the sport’s biggest stage.
