Brian Shaw is one of the greatest legends of the Strongman sport, having dedicated almost two decades of his life to being as strong as possible. Despite the sacrifices he made, Shaw won the World’s Strongest Man four times, cementing his legacy in the sport. However, after his final appearance at the 2023 World’s Strongest Man, Shaw has announced his retirement from the sport.
Setbacks for Brian Shaw Ahead of Final World’s Strongest Man
Brian Shaw was hoping to claim his fifth title at the 2023 World’s Strongest Man in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. However, he faced numerous setbacks leading up to the competition. In January, he suffered a leg infection that resulted in him being hospitalized for over a week and almost led to amputation. This setback made preparing for the WSM almost impossible for Shaw.
Shaw’s Stone Off Against Rauno Heinla
Unfortunately for Brian Shaw, he had to go into a Stone Off against Rauno Heinla in the qualifying stage since he did not win his group, which would have earned him direct qualification. In the Stone-Off, Brian and Rauno lifted 11 stones, which is the most anyone has ever done. However, this made Brian significantly more fatigued than other athletes in the finals, which was evident in all six events. Despite his best efforts, Shaw was unable to secure his fifth WSM title.
