Hafthor Björnsson deadlifts an all-time world record 505 kilograms, officially setting a new benchmark in strength sports. On July 26, 2025, he completed the historic pull at the Eisenhart Black Competition in Bavaria, Germany. Furthermore, this lift surpasses his previous best of 501 kilograms, which he performed in 2020. More importantly, it beats Eddie Hall’s official competition record of 500 kilograms set in 2016.
In comparison, this new mark surpasses Eddie Hall’s historic 500-kilogram lift, which he achieved in competition at the 2016 World Deadlift Championships. Moreover, Björnsson’s performance now stands as the heaviest competitive deadlift in history.
“The Mountain” broke the record in Germany.

At the event, Björnsson approached the bar as the announcer rallied the crowd. Next, he suited up in a deadlift suit and belt, securing his grip with figure-eight straps. Then, he rolled the bar toward himself and began the pull.
Initially, the lift slowed near his knees. However, he powered through the sticking point and stood tall. Finally, he locked out the bar and received the down command from the judge. Fireworks burst as the crowd erupted and his team swarmed the platform in celebration.
Meanwhile, powerlifter Ventsislav Dimitrov attempted to make history as well. In 2023, he had pulled 505 kilograms at this very event. However, that lift used lifting straps and a sumo stance, which made it ineligible under strongman rules.
This time, Dimitrov aimed for 507.5 kilograms. At first, the attempt looked promising. Still, he failed to fully lock it out and missed the lift.
Importantly, sumo stance is not allowed in strongman, and lifting straps are banned in powerlifting. Because of this, Dimitrov’s earlier mark was never counted as official. Therefore, Björnsson’s lift stands as the only valid 505-kilogram deadlift on record.

Earlier this year, Björnsson also attempted a 501-kilogram pull at the Arnold Strongman Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Notably, that lift was raw and used a Rogue Elephant Bar. However, it ended in failure.
Now, Björnsson holds the official world record. Looking ahead, he is expected to attempt an even heavier lift. Furthermore, his next scheduled appearance is at the 2025 World Deadlift Championships on September 6 in Birmingham, England.

Overview
Hafthor Björnsson has set a new all-time world record by deadlifting 505 kilograms. Previously, he pulled 501 kilograms in 2020, but that lift wasn’t in competition. Now, his latest lift surpasses Eddie Hall’s 500-kilogram competition record from 2016. Clearly, this is a historic moment in strength sports. Notably, Björnsson used a conventional stance and strongman-approved gear. Meanwhile, powerlifter Ventsislav Dimitrov tried to pull 507.5 kilograms but failed to lock it out. Earlier, Dimitrov lifted 505 kilograms in 2023. However, that lift wasn’t recognized due to the use of straps and a sumo stance. In the end, Björnsson’s lift solidifies his place among the strongest men in history.
